“Legends of Britannia”: Beyond Trinsic

James McHugh dropped another update into the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter today, with a note on the progress he’s made on the three.js-based Trinsic experiment that I posted about back in August, only now with the original Ultima 7 data imported into the engine.

Some of you may have seen my post on the Ultima subreddit about building out an Ultima 7 prequel using Three.js + Skyrim era graphics as a target. Last night I let Opus 5.5 take a crack and pulling all the U7 game data directly into the engine. You’ll see the building interiors are largely a mess because it’s pressing a tiling system into a 3d world. I figure the folks here might enjoy wandering around. Just a warning, once you get outside of Trinsic all of the NPCs are placeholders as my game doesn’t take place outside of Trinsic at all. You can play here: legendsofbritannia.com/world Just a warning, you’ll need a fairly recent PC or Mac to play. Right now things are largely unoptimized. Have fun!

If you missed the earlier post: the pitch here is an Agatha Christie–style prequel to Ultima 7, set in Trinsic, with you as Spark around the time Inamo has newly arrived — it’s not a straight-up remake of The Black Gate’s plot. The August build lived at a different URL; the project now seems to have migrated to a different domain.

I have not walked Trinsic in this build myself (the good Mr. McHugh’s own note about unoptimized assets gives me pause, given the somewhat less-than-bleeding-edge nature of most of my computing hardware). Still: pulling the shipped Ultima 7 world data into a 3D browser client, even as a messy first pass, is a pretty fantastic development for what was already a promising-looking project.
