New Fan Project: U4DosRandomizer

A popular tool often employed by streamers, randomizers are utilities which randomly redistribute/alter elements of a game’s map, so that each new play experience is substantially — or almost completely — different than prior playthroughs. Fenyx4’s randomizer does this for the entirety of the map of the DOS version of Ultima 4, altering the location of every tile and point of interest on the overworld, and adjusting for the consequences of those changes.

Here’s a sample image of what it can do…imagine playing Ultima 4 with an overland map that looks like this:

The latest version of the randomizer allows users to optionally apply the fix for Hythloth’s 6th level, to optionally apply fixes for the Shrine of Sacrifice, as well as options to enable diagonal attacks, adjust hit chances to match the Apple ][ version of the game, and many other quality of life improvements.

You can grab the randomizer for a variety of platforms from its Github page, or from the project entry here at the Codex.

I tried this out already in its early stages, and it is pretty cool to have Ultima IV be ‘fresh’ again. It is even more polished now, so any fan of Ultima IV is going to enjoy it.
