Check Out DragunBreath’s Custom “Ultima 6” Character Sprites

If you weren’t previously aware, Nuvie — the cross-platform engine for Ultima 6 — supports the addition of custom tilesets and custom character sprites.

Recently, someone with the handle DragunBreath reached out to the Codex with news of some new character sprites they had produced for use with Nuvie. You can see a few of them in action in the screenshot above; DragunBreath’s tileset includes alternative sprites for most of the companions that can be recruited in the game, as well as for a couple of the avatars.

At present, there are alternative tiles for one male Avatar based on what the Avatar is depicted as wearing in the Ultima 5 box art, and alternative tiles for one male and one female Avatar based on the in-game Avatars in Ultima 7. There are also alternative tiles for Blaine, Dupre, Gwenno, Iolo, Jaana, Julia, Katrina, Segallion, Sentri, and Shamino. What’s more, DragunBreath has also made several variants of many of each character’s sprites (e.g. there are sprites for Iolo in which he’s holding a triple crossbow, or a regular crossbow; Shamino is depicted holding either scimtars or a bow). Only one set of sprites can be used at a time, of course…but DragunBreath’s collection gives you the opportunity to tune the look of your in-game companions quite a bit.

If you want to grab a copy of the sprites, you can find them on the Nuvie project entry here at the Codex.

Those look great! I can’t tell which is original and which has been modified. They fit perfectly.

  2. Damn those look amazing. I wonder if someone will ever remake the entire roll of characters in the game with custom sprites. It bothers me so much that every mage, knight and vendor have the same look. Even lord british doesnt have the same hair color as his portrait. Also, would be possible to see characters wearing and holding their best in slot weapons and armor? like endgame sprites with everyone using magic armor and helm, halberds, magic shields, etc. that would be perfect 😀

I don’t know the scope of DragunBreath’s ambitions here, though there may well be additional character sprites forthcoming at some point.

      I’ll pass the question along!

      • honestly I would take on this project in the future, once I learn how to do it. BUt at the moment I have no time to spare to something like this. I already want to translate the entire game and I’m studying how to do it, so messing with the game sprites will take some time. I do have the motivation, I only lack the skills and time hahaha
