Check Out “Penult”, an “Ultima”-like RPG for the Atari 2600

Penult is, according to developer Karl Garrison, “a homebrew game for the Atari 2600”, a “work-in-progress RPG…in the style of the Ultima RPG series.”

Currently, there is a limited demo of Penult available, explore a “reduced” world map, including the starting city, one castle, and one dungeon. Progress through the demo can be saved (if you have an AtariVox or SaveKey attached to a controller, or if the analogous option is enabled in the Stella Atari emulator). The demo also features two display modes (color and monochrome), and is available in both NTSC and PAL formats; it is playable in the Stella emulator, or on original hardware through the use of either a Harmony Encore or a Unocart (with the latest firmware). Garrison cautions that Penult is not compatible with Javatari, or the Atari Flashback Portable.

A manual for Penult is also available. You can find the BIN files for both formats of the demo, as well as the manual, either at the Penult discussion thread over at AtariAge, or at the newly-created project entry here at the Codex.

Is this some kind of Golden Age of Ultima inspired retro-remakes?
