Anyone want to set up a permanent Minecraft server for that Ultima 6 map?

Support my Movember campaign!

Ultima fan (and a follower of mine on Twitter) James A Trujillo suggested — in response to this little slice of awesome — that someone should set up a permanent instance of Minecraft Server to play host to Ian Albert’s Minecraft-based map of Britannia.

This...24-7-365, except in leap years.

It’s a capital suggestion, one which I don’t personally have the capacity to support. However, if any Ultima fans out there — I’m talking to you, Dragons and Dragonettes — is so able, please do consider downloading and installing Minecraft Server. Though you might want to contact and coordinate with Ian Albert first, as his project is…well…his project, and also still a work in progress that will likely see several updates made to it in the coming months.

I have a Debian Liunx server that I might be able to dedicate some resources. What are talking about?

      From the Minecraft download page:

      Multiplayer alpha server software
Minecraft alpha multiplayer support is currently under heavy development, and is riddled with bugs. You can help test it, though. It will get better soon, I promise!

If you’re running on windows and just want to set up a server easily, download Minecraft_Server.exe, place it anywhere you want, then run it.

If you want to run the server on any other OS, or want to run it without the gui, it’s a bit more involved.
First, make sure you can use java from the command line. On linux and mac, this should automatically work, but on windows you might want to set up a PATH system variable.

Then download minecraft_server.jar to anywhere, then launch it as:

      java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui

Presumably, you would then need to download Ian Albert’s mod and place its files in some location within the server’s directory structure. Where that might be, I’m not sure.

@Zygon – You can download the minecraft server file at http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp (you want minecraft_server.jar). The default port is 25565 so you’ll probably have to open that up.

Run the server once and it will create a bunch of files. Drop the level files for the U6 map into a subfolder of whatever folder you have the minecraft_server.jar in. Edit server.properties and set the level-name property to whatever subfolder you put the U6 map into.

Hopefully that’s all you need… I’m pulling from memory so not 100% sure that is all the required steps.

    To clarify;

Run the server once to create a bunch of files. Then shut it down.

Drop the level files for the U6 map into a subfolder of whatever folder you have the minecraft_server.jar in. Edit server.properties and set the level-name property to whatever subfolder you put the U6 map into.

Then run the server again and you should be good to go.

And there’s the missing piece. Thanks, Fenyx!

Hey – I’m a hardcore fan of Ultima games and it happens that I also love minecraft. I came here looking in Google for “minecraft britannia”, as I began to think that someone, somewhere, must have setup a server Britannia-themed. I run a server with 30 slots and I already built the eight shrines of virtues and I have people wandering around looking for them as a little subgame, but its of no use. Despite the spawn being medieval and all, people builts ugly giant beer glasses, robots, or horrible structures that lacks taste.

I wonder if you guys would like to create a server where we guys starts building Britannia. Once done, the map can be offered to download for everyone to play in. That would absolutely rock. I would prefer the Ultima VII Black Gate setting but any other time would also rock.

    Think on it, will you?

Well, it’s worth pointing out that someone has already built Britannia circa Ultima 6 for Minecraft. It’s still slightly “work in progress”, but it looks phenomenal, and it’s pretty much done and built already.

So there’d be no need, unless you really wanted to, to build a new map from scratch. Unless you really, really wanted to, of course.

That’s mostly what this post is about: would anyone be willing to host, on a permanent server, the map that has already been built?

I saw the map, but its not really… what I have in mind. Its a direct conversion, I would like to be a bit more creative with constructions. Lord British castle has to be awesome, and have proper furniture. Check this video of the server I host to see what I mean : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiBZh028eVU

Well, if you set it up, I’ll gladly give it some publicity.

I might also suggest synching up with Ian Albert to see about taking the work he’s done and expanding on it to make it more awesome, as you say.
