New Fan Project: The Ultima 7 Nitpicker’s Delight Patch

Another patch released by Sir John some time over the last year or so — he started discussing it on his blog in about late March of 2019, although the example he provided (corrected excerpts from Astelleron’s log book in Forge of Virtue) were later reworked; the first version was released in June of 2019 — the Ultima 7 Nitpicker’s Delight Patch does for Ultima 7: The Black Gate what Sir John’s analogous patch did for Ultima 6. That is: it corrects various books, notes, lines of dialogue, and other aspects of Ultima 7 that were called out as inconsistent by fans who nitpick details in the Ultima games.

Per Sir John:

[The patch] addresses some inconsistencies and mistakes in the canonical story-line and at the same time tries to enhance your gaming experience by fixing some bugs as well as using helpful and convenient patches some of the die-hard Ultima fans at UDIC and elsewhere have come up with over the time.

Bugs fixed are
-> Tseramed’s “Avatar” bug
-> Rankin’s “liqueur” bug
-> Usecode-sniplet is not displayed anymore, when wasting a potion
-> fishing was made possible by Natreg Dragon
-> Iskander quest is solvable, thx to Natreg Dragon

Tweaks & Patches included in this patch are:
-> Tremor fix by ripsaw8080
-> General MIDi patch by Newton Dragon (optional)
-> An extra portrait by Idspi Dragon
-> UltimaHacks by Eureka Dragon

Also, the reworked version of the modern Antiqua font was added: it now displays more text and makes purchase options available, that were hidden before.

For the nitpicks I have addressed, I tried to be as careful as faithful and tried to keep my modifications to a minimum. At the same time, I was able to iron out many mistakes in the canonical story-line and fix obvious mistakes such as wrong directions, ill-named dungeons, non.existing carts and the lot. Due to the spoilerous nature of the list of nitpicks, I will not post them here. But you can find them with a dedicated “Spoiler-Warning” link on my download page, if I got you intrigued by now

The patch also incorporates John Glassmyer’s various hacks for Ultima 7, which make the game’s keyboard controls a bit more user-friendly (and also backport some of the keyboard control improvements from Serpent Isle to The Black Gate).

You can grab the patch from Sir John’s website, or from the newly-created project entry for it here at the Codex.
