Corven – Path of Redemption: Combat System Survey

While Corven – Path of Redemption has been billed as having a real-time combat system, some of you may recall that a very early iteration of the project reportedly featured a turn-based combat system instead. Since the relaunch of the game’s Kickstarter-based crowdfunding campaign, Lycantic have been collecting feedback from their backers and those who have played the demo…and apparently, there’s have been at least a few people who have asked about the possibility of a return to a turn-based system:

We got some feedback about combat, suggesting that turn-based might be better than real-time.

While we think it’s important for us to stay true to our vision of the game and think that if we try to appease everyone in the end no one will be happy, combat is the one exception.

We started out with turn based combat and after feedback of early followers of our project tried out real time. We were very happy with how real time combat turned out but we are also big fans of turn based combat. So we are open to a discussion in that regard.

As such, Lycantic have come up with a couple of options that they are asking backers to vote on:

– Real-Time combat just like you see it in the demo

– Turn-Based combat where you can choose which party member will use which ability on which target.

The turn based combat would resemble the combat of classic Final Fantasy games. It would NOT mean random encounters, no worries 🙂

We would intentionally not want turn based combat with grid movement for a simple reason: Combat is not the main focus of Corven and having to move characters around in addition to choosing abilities would slow down combat considerably and make it tedious.

Corven is not intended to be a tactical combat simulation. We want combat to be challenging but fun. We do not want it to be the main focus or a big hurdle that stands in the way of you experiencing the story, puzzles and world.

If you’d like to cast your vote for one or the other of these combat styles, head on over to the Lycantic forum and make yourself heard!
