A Sneak Peek at Ultima Forever’s Development

Over on the Ultima Forever Facebook page, the game’s development team have posed an interesting question, asking for input from Ultima fans on a sneak peak at the game’s development they’re preparing.

Well, Dragons and Dragonettes…what are you curious about? What would you like to learn about Ultima Forever, or about Mythic?

Also, Chad Morelock…you are my hero:

I’d like to know how you keep motivation with so many venomous, hateful “fans”.

Class act. But for the sake of context, let’s just say that there are some rather…trolling replies to be found in the first few comments on the question.

Well, quite frankly, Paul Barnett attracts trolls… and it’s his own fault after hyping two disastrous games in a row. Richard got the same treatment after Tabula Rasa. Both of these guys have a lot to prove with their next games.

Paul is using an established and esteemed franchise to release an (incomplete) action ORPG… he seems to be asking for trouble.

Richard is reportedly getting back to his roots and working on a spiritual successor to Ultima… he seems to be asking for retribution.

Time will tell… It’ll be interesting to watch. But if I were a betting man, I’d put my money on RG.

Just a minor correction…or clarification: Garriott’s upcoming spiritual successor to Ultima will be an online RPG as well, and likely will use Facebook (possibly via Zynga) as its main distribution channel. Although he has also alluded to the possibility of mobile ports…

This is true… though I thought Ultimate RPG would be an MMO rather than an ORPG? I guess I should have called it the spiritual sucessor to classic Ultima Online… that might be more accurate!

Well, from what little he’s said about it, I get the impression that he’s trying to pull in his favourite aspects of many of his previous games.

As to a specific label…it’s an MORPG for sure, as it’ll be multiplayer and online (and an RPG). How massive it’ll be is, as yet, uncertain; it may be that only a few hundred players will populate any given world within the game’s overall framework. We just…don’t know yet.
