So…There’s a Browser-Based “Ultima 7” MMO (Kind Of)

The news firehose this week has outrun my ability to pretend I am keeping up. Decompilations, tributes, ports…that was already enough, and then Loresong (@LoresongGame) dropped this:

And then, just a few hours later:

The clips on those posts look like Ultima 7: The Black Gate wearing a browser window. Top-down view of Britannia, original UI (paperdoll, backpack, the green arrow cursor), Trinsic’s familiar cobbles — including a walk through the stable murder scene — and a world map labeled BRITANNIA. I honestly give up; as thrilling as this is, especially given the speed with which it appears to be happening thanks to OpenAI’s Astra model, it is becoming borderline impossible to keep up with all these new AI-driven efforts.

Of course, it’s worth noting that the address bar visible in the videos shows a localhost IP address rather than a public-facing address that anyone who isn’t the developer can access. Visually, it is still the classic assets; the claim is that Astra (and three.js) got a server-backed browser client working in about four hours, with multi-client support and PvP on the “what’s next” list.

Still…this is — could be — a thing. Ultima 7, in an MMO configuration, playable in a browser tab, talking about connected clients and PvP before the paint is dry…I was mentally ready to assume that Ultima’s sun would set, that there’d be fewer and fewer fan projects to excite the dwindling community. And then this comes along…and then in the most casual of ways. Loresong, as the meme goes, just tweeted it out.

You’d do well to follow Loresong for whatever comes next. It’s too early to know for sure whether this will become something that ever sees a public release, but…wouldn’t that be something?
