“Ultima: Exodus”: Three Patches in Three Weeks; Download Now Available

Francois Poisson has been busy! Over the past three weeks, he has posted no fewer than three updates concerning Ultima: Exodus, his RPG Maker MZ-based remake of Ultima III, to the Ultima Dragons Facebook group. We last checked in when we noticed, a bit belatedly, that the remake had been released back in March; it’s come a long way since we first came across it in 2024.

Version 1.05 landed in early October, and it’s largely a cleanup of things that, in Francois’ words, “have been lingering since the early days.” The Recall spell can no longer be used to dodge the “Turned into Ashes” event, the Moon tavern sounds the way it should, and the Gremlins finally show up when they’re supposed to. Most importantly, there’s now a stairway between levels 7 and 8 of the Mines of Morinia, without which the game was unwinnable for parties of pure melee characters. (One imagines a few fighters standing at the bottom of a dungeon level, looking at each other awkwardly.)

Version 1.06 followed a week later, prompted by a core update to RPG Maker MZ itself that broke both the Ascend and Descend spells. Francois describes it as “quite a game breaker indeed, glad I found it!” This update also fixes a misplaced pirate ship spawn near Ambrosia, and a rare bug where beneficial spells cast on allies in combat could simply miss.

And just this week, version 1.07 arrived:

  • Fixed the “Protection” and “Quickness” spells, where if casted by enemy mages the effect would be given to the party instead.
  • Fixed the “Heart Compass” which was affected by the recent(ish) update to RPG Maker MZ’s core breaking the teleport component.
  • Fixed the Moons not being displayed in certain situations where they should show.
  • Fixed broken respawn of some fountains in the dungeon “Perinian Depths”

Enemy mages buffing your party was probably the most charitable bug in the game, but it’s gone now.

The official release of Ultima: Exodus is still being distributed through Steam Workshop, which means you need your own copy of RPG Maker MZ to play it. That’s been a sticking point for more than a few people, since MZ is one of the newer and pricier versions of RPG Maker. So, if you’d rather, there’s a standalone build of the game now available from the Ultima: Exodus project entry here at the Codex.
