Pix’s Ultima Gets Open-Sourced, Gets Updated
Origin Systems historian Pix hasn’t updated his venerable Ultima Patcher in almost two years. This doesn’t mean it isn’t a great utility; it is the recommended way to install any patches and updates for Windows installations of the Ultima games (yes, all of them).
As of this year, however, Pix has open-sourced the application. And Fenyx4 — whose handle you’ll hopefully recognize as one of the key architects of the Codex of Ultima Wisdom — has stepped up to assist with development on the Ultima Patcher, and has just released version 1.7 thereof:
A new version of the Ultima Patcher has recently been released adding support for the PC port of Ultimore 1 – A World Divided. That’s available for download from https://github.com/Fenyx4/UltimaPatcher/releases/download/1.70/UltimaPatcher.zip.
I still need to give this new Ultimore port a go myself. Trying to get anywhere with the Apple II original was a frustrating exercise but I’m looking forward to being able to try it on the PC. I should be reviving this blog as least briefly whenever I do get around to it.
You may notice the external website address. The Patcher is now open source and all the recent work has been done by Fenyx Dragon who has also added support for his own Ultima 4 randomizer patch at the same time.
You can grab the updated version of the Ultima Patcher at the link above, or at the project entry here at the Codex.
Yay!
