Podcast Topic(s)

Much of the discussion in this episode pertains to recent news from Broadsword Online Games, the developers/caretakers of Ultima Online. They have teased a plan to bring UO to “the largest audience ever”, evidently the team’s “biggest and boldest endeavor in over a decade”. This is all well and good — anything that expands the reach of Ultima is a welcome thing — but it does leave open the question of just what this grand, new initiative might be.

Am I the only one who feels this way? I just feel like Ultima had a great run. Highly influential franchise with an interesting development history. It’s been 20 years since a proper Ultima game has been released. It’s over though. I’m just thankful I took the ride and it was a part of my life. I’m not yearning for me. After 10 main series games I’m just not in need of a new one. Least of all a mobile game.

I suppose at some level I’m fine with there not being any new Ultima games, with the series being done.

But equally, I wouldn’t be averse to a new one, even a mobile title. I loved U4E, even when the monetization was still a mess; I wish I could still play it, in fact. And I would enjoy seeing mobile ports of the classic series, analogous to what’s been done for many of the FF games.
