Social Distancing at Home? Self-Isolating? GOG Has Free Games!

With quarantines, self-isolation advisories, and social distancing requirements keeping many of us at home now and for what could well be the next several weeks, it can be difficult to find ways to fill the time and stave off boredom. PC World, however, points out that GOG currently has a grand total of twenty-seven games available to be played for free, including a few Ultima titles.

Here’s the full list of freebies you’ll find on offer, including Gwent, the card game based on Witcher 3:

  • Akalabeth: World of Doom
  • Alder’s Blood Prologue
  • Beneath a Steel Sky
  • Bio Menace
  • Builders of Egypt: Prologue
  • Cayne
  • Doomdark’s revenge
  • Eschalon: Book I
  • Flight of the Amazon Queen
  • GWENT: The Witcher Card Game
  • Hello Neighbor Alpha Version
  • Jill of the Jungle: The Complete Trilogy
  • Legend of Keepers: Prologue
  • The Lords of Midnight
  • Lure of the Temptress
  • Overload – Playable Teaser
  • Postal: Classic and Uncut
  • Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves
  • Shadow Warrior Classic Complete
  • Stargunner
  • Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius
  • Teenagent
  • Treasure Adventure Game
  • Tyrian 2000
  • Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar
  • Ultima World of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
  • Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire

Reading over the selection gives me the urge to hop back into Ultima, Postal, and Shadow Warrior to relive the glory days of my youth. If you’re interested in test-driving newer games, Steam’s also throwing a Spring Game Festival that offers dozens upon dozens of demos for games that were originally supposed to be shown off at GDC 2020 before the event was canceled.

Might be a good time to check out some of these classic titles, or introduce other members of your family/household to them.

Only issue here is there are a lot of demos and demos calling themselves “prologues” hiding among this list. And Gwent is free-to-play all the time, anyway. Nevertheless, lots of good Ultima titles for free, and really, don’t look gift games in the mouth. 😛

Yeah, a fair number of “limited” titles, as it were. Still, a good reminder and a decent list of titles to bide the time with.

Is it OK to advertise that archive.org has Ultima 1-8 free for download? You can even play Ultima 7 in dos box through a browser.
