Linux gamers, you can grab the Sylph Alpha 3 installer right here, or via the link in the embedded tweet above.
And if you’re curious as to what’s new in Sylph’s third alpha version, here’s a video showcasing some of the new features:
Among the changes: the addition of water to the game engine, the rudiments of collision detection, improved lighting, and increased stage width.
Thanks for the shout-out, WtF, though I admit I’m a bit surprised. It’s even in Codex proper rather than WtFBlog. Should I make the pilot the Avatar, and the insurgent end boss the Guardian to justify your post? I’m about to implement Earth from space as a backdrop to the first boss fight…perhaps I should replace the texture with Britannia. The Avatar saves Britannia…in the year 3032. 🙂
Way I see it, it’s helping Sanctimonia, so why not report on it?
And the solution for an Ultima em> connection is obvious: the winning player gets awarded the title of “Space Ace”.
Heh, you bring up some interesting points actually. Garriott’s intense fascination with space travel does permeated his games, even the later ones though more through the story than players having direct control over starships.
With respect to helping Sanctimonia, Sylph has already helped me emotionally by allowing me to realize I can actually finish and release a decent game (nearly there), and hopefully once released will facilitate better media communication. If it only causes people to refer to me as “the guy who made Sylph” instead of “some random guy on the Internet” it will have done its job.
I just implemented planets:

What do you think Garriott would say if the ISS buzzed by and you could shoot it? Maybe some mix of excitement, revulsion, and glee in shooting it down. I think it’d be fun to add.
Planets! Sweet.
I think RG would get a kick out of being able to nuke the station, personally. Or out of a mission requiring it to be protected.
He probably would. As nice as he seems, he’s always had a dark side that relished chaos and destruction.
I better-implemented planets. Here’s a test video I just rendered:

Notice the clouds move from west to east, slowly. Hopefully Garriott will appreciate the subtleties.
In the event anyone finds their way here and notices the links are dead, I experienced some superficial data loss and old screenshots and alpha releases are no longer available. Alpha 4 and new screenshots will come soon however, so my apologies for the inconvenience.
Thanks for the update.
