The Dark Unknown: Cloth Map Concept Revealed

Goldenflame Dragon recently posted a concept version of the cloth map for The Dark Unknown to the game’s Facebook page:

And here is what he had to say about it:

With some luck, this is what my cloth maps will eventually look like:

Map by my brother Dave, who FB will not let me tag in this post for reasons that I’m sure are scrutable to it. Not a final final draft, but close enough that I am finally willing to post an image!

This is, I have to say, a pretty keep re-imagining of the Lands of the Dark Unknown. And the colours of the map are excellent…pleasing to look at and with just about the right amount of texture. (Although I do think the coastal littorals need a bit of attention.)

Is it wrong to say this looks like a diagram of the female reproductive system

You know, I’ve noticed that many of his maps seem to make allusions to female body “parts”. I know artists have a history of studying the female form, however; I’m curious if the inclusions are on purpose or an unconscious thing. Seriously, have you seen the original Shroud map? Don’t you think the lava “river” looks just a tad suspect? And how about the perfectly round desert area? Take the map in as a whole, you know, like one of those 3D picture images and see what you discover. I will say no more. 🙂

That map reminds me a lot of the overworld map from Dragon Warrior/Quest 1
