The CRPG Addict: (Almost) A Tragedy!

Grinding is a big part of the earlier Ultima games, including Ultima 5. Whereas some of the later games can be passed at fairly low levels of experience, and whereas others — Ultima 9, especially — ensure that you gain levels as you progress through the major plot points of the game, the earlier Ultimas basically require you to slay large numbers of monsters in order to level up enough to survive the final quest.

And so the Addict spent a bunch of time doing just that.

And then: tragedy! His savegame evidently became corrupted, throwing the possibility of a replay in front of him. Fortunately, he was able to recover some of his progress from a backup he made at the beginning of the month, which limited the amount of replaying required.

And with what replaying he did do, he was able to answer several lingering questions he had about events and locations in the game.

I think of all the Ultima games, U5 is the one that requires the most grinding.

    Really?

I would have thought U3 was the grindy-est game.

I do remember alot of grinding in U3 but its quicker to get your characters up. If I remember correctly, it only takes you 100 points to go up each level in U3 where in U4 and U5 it doubled with each successive level.

I just hate the way xp is only given to the person that actually does the kill. If it wouldve been shared amongst the group like AD&D (and just about every other RPG) it wouldve made things ALOT easier when trying to level up the rest of the party..

“Joke Remakes” is near the bottom of the sidebar, just above the “Cemetery” & “Orphanage” links. The project itself is second on the list, just below Ultimoid.

It occurs to me that “Joke Remakes” is a bad name for that section. “Spoofs and Parodies” would be more accurate. I’ll change that later tonight.
