A Lengthy Interview With Richard Garriott

Sergorn Dragon brought this to my attention earlier today, after seeing it at Horizons Tavern. It’s an interview from Good Game, a feature that runs on ABC Television in Australia, with Ultima creator Richard Garriott. And it’s not anything short, either: it clocks in at just a few seconds under an hour, and covers a ton of concepts:

His mother made him that necklace, by the way.

You’ve got nothing else to do for the next hour, right, good Dragons and Dragonettes? Pull up a chair, pour yourself an ale, and enjoy.

That’s the first time i’ve ever actually heard him speak except for the digitized speech in Ultima VII… and he doesn’t sound at all like I thought he would.

I imagined Lord British to be… well, a lot more british.

That was actually a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.

My hopes for his new games keep going up with every new thing I see/hear him say. I might even actually play a “social network” game.

Nothing really new here, but interesting interview to watch none the less.

I’m really looking forward to what Richard Garriott’s next game. He think he really gets the videogame industry, and even if some of his latest endeavour weren’t that successful or flawed in execution he always has great concepts. I’m sure his Portalarium game is gonna be interesting.

On a side note I love the virtual ecology bit about UO – this kind of stuff really should have been put into a single player game.

It’s kinda the sort of thing that Radiant AI was meant to do for Oblivion. But in that too, it had problems.

If Radiant AI worked to its potential, animals would have fed off each other. People would have hunted animals. If the player wiped out a herd of deer, the wolves would have had to move elsewhere, or possible attack towns. All sorts of cool stuff could happen. But I think it just always doesn’t end up working the way it is meant to.

I look forward to watching this tonight. Thanks!

Darn good interview. Some classic tales of Ultima Online. Very funny. He does not look at healthy as he was?? Or is this just me? I heard they cut some of his liver out or something like that??
