Back to Roots Update: Schedules and Conversations

Fearyourself sent me an update by email to let me know that he has added a few more features to his multi-game engine, Back to Roots.

Schedules

Everything is actually implemented, I had a bit of work making the NPC allowed to go upstairs and go to sleep, and then come back down. This demanded a little overhaul of the base code but now everything seems to be in order.

Conversations

I’m now working on this part. There is a lot to do here and slowly it’s getting clearer. I think I summarize everything here.

The question of fixing the Nytegaard’s tool is a big one, something I’ll be thinking of in the next couple of days.

Tonight, I’ve actually started handling special characters in the text, for example pausing the text, inserting the Avatar’s name in the text as we can see.

Hopefully, finishing the text system won’t be so long now.

That’s quite an excellent lot of progress, and an excellent expansion of this fledgling — but very promising — engine, which (of course) intends to eventually support many of the earlier Ultima games.

    Actually, I got most of it handled now as you can see in this teaser http://gamengine.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/discussion.mpeg. I don’t handle the labels of the scripting system, this is one of two last points, the other being the transfer of objects but that’s a detail (it’s handled by the engine so it’s only a matter of linking the two together)

    I still wonder about modifying the original conversation extractor to include what I’ve learnt. In all of your opinion, is there any use of updating/modifying the conversation extractor (found here http://nodling.nullneuron.net/nytegard/nytegard.html) or should I provide a totally new and improved one? Or we don’t care? 🙂

    By the way, is there a wiki page with all the dialogues of the IV and V ? Because, at worse, I could update those 😉
