Added: TileWorlds

This project is the next generation of the Ultima-inspired 2D RPG-making engine. Entirely web-based, built in HTML and jQuery, TileWorlds “lets anyone create a role-playing adventure similar in style to the classic Ultima games.”

At present, it’s also still under development, and its producer is hoping to attract a few collaborators who would like to assist with continuing project. If that sounds like you, good reader, drop a comment below and I will forward your contact info to the man behind it.

  1. It would be nice if someone ported the original data files of an Ultima game to TileWords’ file format[s]. I like the physics of the lava flow, stopped by mountains and such. Got me thinking about fluid dynamics with respect to elevation. All good ideas.

Modern game engines simulate fluids well enough, when those fluids are just sitting there in a pool or pond. Fluid flow, however, is something we don’t see, and it would be very interesting if a game were to attempt such a thing.

I’d love to see more 2D tile-based games for mobile platforms (ie. smartphones/pads). Smartphones nowadays have more power than the Apple2 a lot of people played these games on – why hasn’t someone taken the time to do this? Who wouldn’t want to play ultima 4 and 5 style on the train after work? Call EA! And work on a Bard’s Tale port while you’re a it!

Also, having them as a standalone ‘app’ and not an internet-based game would be great.

Well, there are some great Ultima-style (and UW-style, for that matter) games on the iPhone. Akalabeth has also been ported, and there is of course the standing Ultima 4 development challenge.

So it’s not like no such games exist. Could we stand to see more? Yes, it is quite possible that we could. But don’t think that none exist.

Actually, once I’ve got the downloads restored, I mean to review a few of said games available for iPhone.
