Lords of Xulima: Available for Purchase at GOG

I’ve been aware of Lords of Xulima for a while now…ever since the game was successfully Kickstarter in November of 2013, actually. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on the Codex, though, because it never struck me as being particularly Ultima-like. The combat, for example, is rather more in line with what you’d find in Might & Magic or a Wizardry game:

Burninating the monsterforms!

Burninating the monsterforms!

And the world navigation sometimes seems more akin to that of Baldur’s Gate:

Why do I get the feeling the interior is on a separate map?

The conversation system also fails to inspire any Ultima-like vibes:

Not that it looks bad. It just looks like some other RPG.

But equally, here’s what the creators had to say about their inspirations:

Lords of Xulima is inspired by the spirit of the old school classics such as Ultima, Might & Magic and Wizardry. It has also been heavily influenced by Baldur’s Gate and includes elements of Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and even King’s Bounty. Lords of Xulima subtly combines the best elements of these titles with new ideas to make a unique gaming experience in the world of RPGs.

So…it’s probably worth mentioning that the game is available for purchase at GOG, in both a standard and deluxe edition. (There’s also a deluxe edition upgrade available, for those who had previously pre-ordered or purchased the standard version.)

Might be one to check out, if you’ve got an old-school itch that needs some preliminary scratching before Pillars of Eternity gets released.

I’ve been wondering when you would mention this game. You’re right about its questionable relevance to Ultima, but one can’t help but think Ultima when simply reading its title, particularly if familiar with the “Lords of Ultima” RTS.

I’ve seen it pop up in the news feeds now and again for some months. Xulima always seems to be very close to Ultima, to my eyes…but every time I looked at the game, I didn’t see much of Ultima about it.

      Still, worth a mention.
