Video: Origin Systems – Works-In-Progress (1994)

Joe Garrity put me on to the University of Texas at Austin’s The Warren Spector Papers site, which features — among other things — a number of videos donated to the archive by Spector himself. I’ll be featuring these videos over the next few days, starting with this demo reel of games in development at Origin in 1994:

The video focuses on a number of different games, including BioForge (Ken Demarest talks about its production), Ultima 8 (Richard Garriott talks about the ways in which it departs from previous Ultimas), Wings of Glory (we get a look at the RealSpace engine, and Warren Spector talks about the history that informs the game), Pacific Strike (producer Eric Hyman talks about how the game lets players change history), System Shock (Warren Spector talks about playing the game), and Super Wing Commander. It’s a bit under seven minutes long, so not a lengthy watch.

And according to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, the original video format was VHS…so you know.

  1. I’d like to point out that nearly every scene showing Ultima 8 involves the Avatar dying. Which…makes it a pretty good summary really.
