Check Out This “RPG Maker MZ”-Based Remake of “Ultima 1”

The latest in a spate of projects making use of one or another of the RPG Maker game development applications — one is reminded of the early 2000s — this as-yet untitled project is Marcus Stewart attempt to a create a remake of Ultima 1 using RPG Maker MZ. Currently, it is being made using default assets from the base engine and some of its addon packs, so the overall look is much more JRPG-like. Whether this will change in the future is uncertain.

As of November of 2024, the monster hunting quests from each of the kings in the game have been implemented, as have the sign-post quests; these have also been randomized between all of the kings in the game, to add variety. The princesses in the game can also be rescued. Land vehicles were working, previously, but a plugin update has evidently broken this functionality for the time being.

The developer posts progress updates on the Ultima Dragons Facebook group, so that would be where to go if you’d like to follow this project. No playable downloads are available yet, but there is a newly-minted project entry here at the Codex ready to play host to them when and if they are released.
