“Ultima Underworld Editor”: Version 0.2 Released, With Source Code
If you aren’t familiar with krokots’ Ultima Underworld Editor, it’s a Windows-based, nearly full-fledged editor for the first Ultima Underworld game. It allows players to fully edit all nine levels of the Stygian Abyss, to the point that nine brand new levels could in fact be created. A conversation editor is also included, and the utility supports importing custom textures and sprites as well. String and object data in the game can also be modified, enabling users to modify mantras, add new scrolls and books, and modify monster statistics (among other things).
The initial version of the editor was released in 2019, and I missed that a slight update — to correct a bug with the handling of terrain traps — was released in 2022. Around the same time as that update, krokots did also promise that the source code for the editor would soon be released, but “soon” is always a very relative term where Ultima fan projects are concerned.
Happily, as of this week, the source code for the editor has been made available; you can download it from krokots’ thread for the editor at the GOG forums, or via the project entry here at the Codex.
