Check Out This English Translation for the PSX Port of “Ultima Underworld”!
The PSX (that is: the original PlayStation) port of Ultima Underworld was only ever released in Japan, a fact much-bemoaned by fans of the game who didn’t speak Japanese. Compared to the original game, the PSX release had several notable improvements, including new cinematics, 3D models for characters and monsters, a full-screen 3D display, and of course various adjustments to the game’s controls to enable it to work well with a controller.
Fortunately, Gertius has now released what appears to be a full translation of the port into English. The patch is delivered in the form of what is called an xdelta, a modified version of the CUE sheet that would accompany an IMG-format optical disc image. The ROMhacking site has tools available which will allow for the xdelta patch to be applied to ROMs of Ultima Underworld.
Downloads of the patch can be found either at its page over at ROMhacking, or at the shiny new project entry here at the Codex.
