Want To See Ultima 4’s Dungeons in VR?
James Surine has been working on bringing Britannia and its dungeons, from Ultima 4, into virtual reality.
Using the u4-decomplied project to create a DLL that I can import and use with Unity3D which then I can use to display the state of the game in VR instead of on the small screen. Outdoors, combat, moongates & settlements are working for the most part. I will need to rewrite the way dungeons work however as the original game switches from a top-down tile-map view and a simple 3D hallway view quite a bit which won’t really work in VR, I’m planning to try and change the dungeons to an all top-down tile-map view if possible. Some experimenting with speech synthesis for npc conversations which required modification of the original npc dialog to be first person only, not sure if it will work. I don’t have it working on the Oculus Quest yet or even outside of the unity3d editor environment. So lots more work to be done but as a proof of concept it seems to be functional. Should be able to patch the original AVATAR.EXE to a DLL at runtime using a .bps file.
He has since gone on to release two other videos, including the one embedded above and a somewhat more dizzying one that shows the in-game UI mapped to VR panels. It’s a bit trippy, but also quite fascinating to see.
