The “Ultima 7 Part 2: Serpent Isle” German Translation – Now in Beta Testing
Sir John has been working on a German translation of Ultima 7 Part 2: Serpent Isle for a while now; the project first kicked off in September of 2018, more or less. And it’s been quite some time since we’ve looked in on progress that has been made on the translation effort. So, to quickly recap work that was done in 2019, Sir John progressed the translation patch through several successive milestones, though he did struggle a bit with the Gwani language and how to translate its odd syntax. Still, toward the end of last year, much of the main continent and all of the quests in the northern forest had been translated.
Work on the translation continued through the start of 2020 (issues with the Gwani and Goblin languages were, for example, resolved as of January), and the formal beta test kicked off in August of the year. Thereafter, Sir John’s development blog — now available only in German, by the way — lapsed into silence for a bit…but this silence on the front end did not equate to a lack of work on the project. The beta test has been ongoing since then, with numerous bugs and issues identified and squashed; several successive beta releases have been pushed out.
And Sir John is hopeful that we will see the patch released at some point in early 2021. Until then, perhaps check out the video above, for an idea of what the game will ultimately look like with the translation patch applied!
