The Ultima 6 Remake: Staged Release Plan

Well, here’s a fine thing to have as news on the 30th anniversary of Ultima 6’s release!

There’s been a new update posted to the Facebook page of The Ultima 6 Remake (the Exult-based remake of Ultima 6), which brings news of continuing — maybe we should say “resumed” — work on the project:

I’ve been doing a little scattered work on the mod here and there. Mostly trying my hand at the portrait upgrades since everyone who has offered help always falls through. I’m still open to help in that regard, IF you are willing to finish it! 😁 In other news, apparently my scripted endgame somehow broke. Draxinusom doesn’t feel like taking the gate to the Codex room…. but I swear it worked not too long ago! hah. My part time job ended and for the mean time I’m home so the plan is to try and get this finished at least enough for testing. The idea is to release things in areas, like maybe Castle British and all it’s npcs first, and the overworld. That way it technically can’t be played through, but people can focus on Castle British npcs and making sure everything works right, and I can fix things as it goes. Then, release Britain, and other cities. Also, it helps from getting overwhelmed by bugs because i’m sure many will be found! If you have any *easy* ways to go about bug reporting that doesn’t make me go cross eyed, let me know! The main thing right now is going back through and cleaning up the conversations because 2020 me knows more about programming than 2009 me 🤣. A lot of cosmetic things are still on the list, like maybe a few shapes and paperdolls, portraits of course, things that I’ve been trying to do myself but takes a while. Some minor dungeons that I keep putting off like the Swamp cave that are reeealy big yet not plot essential.

Some interesting tidbits herein, probably the most interesting of which is that the planned release of the remake will (now) be in stages. It does make sense, given the size (or lack thereof!) of the team, though it does mean we will be waiting a little while for the complete Ultima 6 experience.
