Corven – Path of Redemption: Just to be Clear, Yes, It’s an RPG
There was some confusion over the most recent news I posted about Corven – Path of Redemption, which quoted a series of tweets in which Corv — formerly the head of the Titans of Ether, now embarking on an essentially solo career as an independent game developer — talked about transitioning between the Unreal and Unity engines. In the course of those tweets, which date back to 2018, he mentioned that Corven wouldn’t be a pure RPG, but would rather be more of an adventure-oriented title.
This plan has since changed, however:
It’s been a while, sorry about that! As you know there were changes in the team and I tried to figure out how to best proceed. There was the plan to ditch RPG parts of it to make it easier to develop, but that’s not the case after all. The concept and workflow are streamlined and final now. No change in the team can affect development anymore (finally). This is what you can expect:
– mostly open world (dungeons etc. are separate scenes)
– iso/3D person view
– turn based combat
– story still plays a central part and is not an afterthought
– hearkens back to games like Ultima IV-VII and also some JRPGs like early Final Fantasy.
– it is an RPG… stats, abilities and a party will be there
And just in case the above isn’t clear enough, Corv has been re-explaining as much on Twitter this week:
I just realised that the article shows the old planned changes that would come along with Unity but not the direction I ended up with: https://t.co/uclX4KodRq

When I switched over to Unity after the Unreal programmer left I wanted to be make sure I will not try to do something I can't. The adventure approach seemed reasonable. However after I did some gameplay prototypes I got to a point where I was 100% certain I can (cont.)

…that I can do the RPG after all, without said programmer. I am at a point where I can pull this off without having to rely on anyone else anymore. There will be no more delays, no more hiatuses, absolutely nothing stands in the way of the success of this project anymore (cont.

.. See, both Ultima IX Redemption and the previous version of this game couldn't continue because of not being able to keep key people on unpaid. It's understandable but extremely frustrating. This is not the case any longer. Everything you see on the website and in videos (cont.

.. is the result of work done by me with my trusty musician Patrig and some freelancers. No one involved that could bail on the project.
So yes, Corven will be a RPG – everything in this news post is the most recent and final plan for this game: https://t.co/uclX4KodRq— Lycantic (@LycanticCorven) October 17, 2019
So there you have it: Corven will, in fact, be an RPG. And I’d like to just offer my apologies to Corv for causing some confusion on this point!
