Slashing Dragon Examines the History of Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale
Slashing Dragon has published an article on his blog in which he attempts to reconstruct the timeline and history of Portalarium’s Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale…the game that at one time was touted as a means of launching Shroud of the Avatar, back when that game was being imagined as the Ultimate RPG, and being planned as a Facebook game, possibly to be published by Zynga.
It…was another time. While mobile games have risen to prominence these days, there was a brief period around the turn of the decade where social media platforms — Facebook in particular — seemed to be the dominant platform in casual gaming (remember Farmville?). Indeed, we covered some examples of games on that platform here on the Codex, notably (because it used the Portalarium Player technology) A Mystical Land (which was rebranded as Villagers and Heroes back in 2013, and has since been ported to iOS and Android).
Anyhow, click on through to give Slash’s article a read. I didn’t realize that the Codex has, in its own way, become something of a shrine to Ultimate Collector…but, as Slash informed me while he was writing the article, it would appear that this site has more information about the game than most. Many sites that covered the game during its development have since closed down, and both Zynga and Portalarium have expunged mention of the game from their respective websites.
A summary (with links) of all of the articles about Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale that were posted on the Ultima Codex during the time the game was in development. Many of these links, as well as the commentary at the end, informed Slashing Dragon’s research article on the game.
Good stuff.
Yeah, it’s a good summary.
