Shroud of the Avatar – Update of the Avatar #287

Greetings Friends! Hope you are all doing well.  With some of the recent news going on, Portalarium has gone ahead and pushed forward on the Episode 2 preparatory moves.  And so here’s what we have for you in this week’s edition of Update of the Avatar:

  • Episode 2 Stretch Goal Store
  • Shroud of the Avatar Rewards Program

Episode 2 Stretch-Goal Store

Revealed in the Release 55 Livestream, Portalarium has decided to goback to the “Stretch Goal Store”  that they did years ago. Now while it is nice to see that mounts are still something the devs want to do,  I think this is the wrong approach for them to go in helping fund Episode 2 content and mechanics. My reasoning is as follows:

  1. These features should be either already part of Episode 2, and not a stretch goal.
    Or they need to dismiss these stretch goals and focus more on doing Episode 2 in a smaller scope (like they should have done with Episode 1) and providing better writing, better UI, better content overall, improved mechanics from Episode 1, and better optimization/polish.
  2. Backers (regardless of if they already own future episodes or not) would be far more willing to donate to an Episode 2 with a smaller scope but is robust and clean/polished, than to donate to these stretch goals that will only increase the scope and cost of development.  We have all seen what increasing the scope and cost has done to Episode 1, the developers at Portalarium need to realize this and plan accordingly.

As before with the Stretch Goal Store, when you purchase the item you will get it as an in-game reward immediately (or very soon if the item is still in progress), even if the stretch-goal is not met. These rewards are a unique version, different from what will inevitably also be sold in the add-on store, in-game nor as a bundle item. Once the stretch-goal is met devs will begin work on the functionality for Episode 2 and all the items purchased would gain some function related to the goal when Episode 2 launches. For instance the foal from the Mounts stretch goal would grow into a horse that you could then ride. Each goal will have a progress bar underneath tracking the progress. General philosophy is that these items cost slightly more than equivalent items because they are linked to stretch goals.

The devs are starting with this previous old stretch goal store item and will add further previous stretch-goals over the next several months including Flexible Lot Placement, Pack Animals, and Elven Playable Race.   They do claim in a note however taht many of these are similar but different to the previous stretch goal store items… so while the streach goal may be old, the items are either re-skins or new items to try and encourage ppl to donate for these features.

The details on the Horse and Mount Stretch goal is as follows:

Mounts: Players will be able to ride horses around the game (including horses tamed in the game)! These baby horses will grow up to be fully grown and mountable horses when this feature goes live in the game. NOTES: There will be some kind of summon mount emote / key. When mount appears you automatically vault into the saddle. Cannot fight while mounted. If you are hit / enter combat while on horseback you are knocked from your horse. Mounts cannot be ridden indoors or underground.

Ornate Hitching Post: Decorate your lot with the Ornate Hitching Post! This item may have additional functionality if the Horse Mounts stretch goal is met for Episode 2.

Roan, Appaloosa, and Dun Foals: These foals (baby horses) can be used as non-combat pets that are both placeable as decoration pets on a property, and will follow you around town! If the Mounts stretch goal is met for Episode 2, these horses will grow up into rideable mounts!


Shroud of the Avatar Rewards Program

Devs have announced a Shroud of the Avatar Rewards Program! It gives you the best rate on purchasing Gold Crowns, AND you receive rare stretch-goal items from our monthly livestreams! This program automatically enrolls you in the monthly livestreams (counts as the $5 minimum purchase) along with other perks.

For $9 USD per month you will receive the following:

  • 9 Gold Crowns of the Obsidians every month
  • Automatic Participation in the Monthly Livestream Stretchgoals (counts as the $5 minimum purchase)
  • Exclusive Title every 3 months
  • Pick any Dye Pack every 6 months
  • Pick any three of the 7 Obsidian Potions every month, including:
    • Potion of Capacity: Increases carrying capacity
    • Potion of Conservation: Reduces reagent use chance

Release 55 Livestream Results

The dev Monthly Livestream for Release 55 was considered a huge success by the devs. They reached 3 of the stretch goals

The total for the Friday July 6 livestream as of 7 PM CDT was an amazing:

  • ACHIEVED $25K: Silver Serpent Crackle Aerial Combo Replenishing Box of Fireworks

  • $50K: Lord British Pavers
  • $65K: Lord British Round Table
  • $80K: Lord British Large Telescope
  • $90K: Lord British Sword and Halberd
  • $100K: Lord British Coronated Leather Helm and Bow

As like past telethons, Telethon Funding Stretch Goal Rewards will be rewarded to any backers that pledged a minimum of $5 from 12:00 PM CDT to Midnight July 6th. These rewards should show up on your account page within the next couple of weeks and will begin showing up in the game over the next few releases starting as soon as Release 58.


R54 Livestream Missed Questions Part 1

As always devs had questions left unanswered after the two R54 Livestreams! Devs picked those questions they were willing to answer and posted them to the forums Thursday. Sadly the moderating team of SotA have already changed things in it, since it was originally posted by Starr Long. Dev Answers are in Bold.

Here is the first part of the questions that we did not have time to get to during the R54 Livestreams (which are also now on youtube here and here). I tried my best to answer these (with help from the rest of the team) but some we just don’t have details yet to provide. I probably won’t have time to do any follow ups to these. The community did a great job assisting us this telethon to make sure we didn’t miss a single question.

Please note I deleted some duplicate questions and also deleted any questions that we answered with the Q2 post or with the release of R54 or that we answered in previous livestreams. Also note that we are generally going to stop answering questions about “when?” as those are answered by our quarterly schedule posts and any other answers are going to be either “No ETA” or “soon” or “will update with the next quarterly post”.

Also note that we see a LOT of repeat questions and requests. Please consider reading one of the other missed question posts, watching one of the previous livestreams, reading one of the transcripts, and/or reading our Post Episode 1 plan post before posting a question. Your question might have already been answered.

A new final thought: This tradition of answering almost every single question may not be sustainable in the near term with our current team size so please understand.

Browncoat Jayson: Would you share you plans for non-Gold CotOs, and consider giving the others a focus via rewards, special vendors, etc?
STARR: The plan has always been to have a way to convert the non-gold crowns into gold crowns (or even other currencies). We just have not yet had time to implement this exchange system.

Roycestein: Now that store credit is no longer available. Would you please set the price of COTO on the add-on store to start at $5 for 5 COTOs, so that people who used to buy store credit will be able to get something equivalent and also at the same time make it more appealing for those who have to pay sales taxes?
STARR: No. We want the exchange rates for the larger crown purchases to be better than the smaller purchases.

*Syznow: Now that store credits have been converted to COTOs and since COTOs have become a replacement for store credits, will there be an adjustment of the automated COTOs drop rate in game so that the ongoing influx of COTOs won’t cause COTO drops to become impossibly rare?
STARR: There is no link between the drop rate and the purchase of crowns so not sure why you think that there would cause crown drop rates to decrease.

Vallo: Will the new resources Darkstarr mentioned during Livestream be more abundant in PVP zones?
STARR: Not a new resource, new currency.

Doctorface: Why are the swashbucklers STILL using two handed swords when they SHOULD be using sword and shield?
STARR: Bandwidth and priority. We will eventually fix

Lone-Wolf: Will it be possible to put repeatable quest in it own tab in the journal
STARR: Yes

Paladin Michael: When will we get a first view on the new UI, especially on dialogue system and quest journal?
STARR: Right now we are focused on improving visuals because that can be done quickly. Larger tasks like overhauls to the journal or dialogue system will take much longer.

Falcon Rainfeather: Can we get wider slider for the crafting interface.
STARR: We can investigate but there are limits based on screen resolution.

Xkillerz: What about a sound when you find an artifact or effect around your avatar that makes everyone notice you got one?
STARR: Nice idea

Mishras: Is it possible to have avatars on the same account share compass locations?
STARR: Hmm. Not sure what the application or need for this is?

Kai PoT: Will Grandma Kellen’s Recipe ever be a craftable recipe?
STARR: Perhaps

Paulie Walnuts: Could we get an NPC Building that’s a crafting pavilion with all of the crafting tables already in it?
STARR: We can consider but it would be super expensive if it came with crafting tables built in.

Xee: Could GM or higher level master craft/enchanters have more options to select from and or ability to influence more what outcomes? instead of 3 choices maybe 4 once GM etc.? or perhaps a reroll ability for outcomes?
STARR: We have considered all of those and they may happen.

Falcon Rainfeather: Can we get more cooking recipes with higher intelligence buffs? Especially vegetarian recipes for a certain elf we all know and love.
STARR: Intelligence is one of the more powerful stats since it controls focus regeneration among other things. To that end we have to be very careful about how many things buff intelligence and how much we buff it.

Falcon Rainfeather: Will we be able to salvage all the rusty cookware one day?
STARR: Perhaps

Gandik: Can we get treasure maps to the fishing loot table?
STARR: Sure, once we add a treasure map system to the game (Episode 2).

Xadoor: In the Rise there are a few crafting tables. Could we get a woodworking table added somewhere so while farming mages we can chop up all the worthless staves?
STARR: Perhaps

Jaibyrd: Will it be possible to be able to copy sheets of music that we purchase from others or create ourselves on the ingame Printing Press?
STARR: Good idea

Xee:Can we get Staffs and Two hand weapon enchants adjusted so they are equivocal to 2x 1 hand? example one can get +6 int on two wands where a staff you can only get +6 once.
STARR: We can look at those numbers

Calan Caitin: Could masks be made to provide eternal patterns for leather helms? (Zombie, Elf, Kobold, etc…)
STARR: yes

Warrior B’Patrick: Some creatures we fight are not tamable, Unicorn, but it would be really nice to be able to tame a mushroom. Their confuse attack would be very nice.
Pawz: When are higher level tamable pets coming?
Pawz: Will Unicorns be tamable?
Pawz: Will we be getting new taming skills?
STARR: When we expand the taming system to include leveling pets and more pet skills these requests could become realities (Episode 2).

HannahAlpenglow: Could you create a rounded semi-circular table or counter (picture a table with a rainbow shape)? I would like to be able to make a circular space where a vendor/bartender can be in center of it but there are not any rounded table options.
STARR: Good suggestion

Nick: Would Port consider creating and giving POT owners limited lot markers that allows anyone to claim without using a lot deed but must pay taxes.
STARR: No.

Kai PoT: Can we get Octoberfest style Tavern Barkeep/Tavern Guest NPCs (or get PoT NPCs reshaped)?
STARR: Good suggestion

Kai PoT: Can we place indoor deco items on PoT outdoors, or on NPC buildings ?
STARR: No

Xee: Can POT owners have the ability in the future to form terrain (flatten or extrude)?
STARR: Unlikely

That_Shawn_Guy: can pot owners optionally get a mail when a lot is claimed, unclaimed, expired, etc?
STARR: Yes, eventually

Acaelus: Can we get creeping vines and wall ivy deco that can be placed on walls like banners are?
STARR: Good suggestion

Vladamir: MJ from MassivelyOP likes gustball, but thinks we should be able to punt it down the field. How about doing that by stacking gust?
STARR: Will consider

Dereck Visaard: Can you please make it where a bulletin board placed in a POT in a shared area counts as 1 deco item, rather than 1 + however many fliers are put on the board?
STARR: Unfortunately we cannot because those fliers have to be dynamic so that they can be customizable.

Calan Caitin: Will there be other guard towers like the Elven style? (ie: Shogun, Viking, Kobold, Obsidian)
STARR: Yes eventually.

Calan Caitin: Could craftable wooden walls be allowed to hang decorations on?
Ancev: wonder if palisade walls will ever be deco-able
STARR: We have answered this question before but I will answer it again. The issue with walls is that they have collision shapes that are smaller than the actual object to make them easier to place together. This means though that when you put a deco on it the deco will sink into it vs. sit on the surface. Fixing this will take a lot of rework so while we want to do this it won’t be soon.

Neuron: With the introduction of the storefront, will you be adding themed shops into the game? For example, a viking, elven, or obsidian storefront to display/sell our merchandise?
STARR: Yes eventually.

Barugon: How about an asylum village home?
STARR: Not sure what that would be. We already have a prison home.

Sentinel: With all the new basements entrances available, are there plans to create matching basement types? Like Elven basements, Viking basements and so on? Something along the lines of what was done with the Inn’s?
STARR: Yes

Nick: Would port consider creating a dungeon like chillblains, but with anti buff scene. Removes all buffs except those from obsidian potions.
STARR: Great idea

Nick: Would it be possible to have a level cap for non adventuring scenes?
STARR: Yes

Warrior B’Patrick: The new dungeon entrances sound great. Can I suggest there be a stair version for basements?
STARR: Good idea

FreudRage: Any plans for a quest breadcrumbs or hint system?
Jefe: Will there be a mechanism to share a quest with your party members?
STARR: Yes but it will require a complete overhaul of the quest system so not soon.

Lone-Wolf: Can we get an abandon quest button for quest we have done but still are in our journal?
STARR: You should be able to go to town criers to clear these.

Doctorface: I love my actions being referenced in the world,will we see more of this in the future? (IE Boedy’s massive dragon killing spree from last year)
STARR: Eventually.

XKillerz: How about trade runs in this game between major cities in the game with a cart moving on the map. Depending on the trade route with common to rare resources it lures random encounters on different difficulty levels.
STARR: Neat idea

Brass Knuckles: Ravensmoor ruins, can you expand this dungeon keeping the current theme there are only a few pulls for groups to do?
STARR: Perhaps eventually

Sir Grant: Any chance that you could place POT vendors in at least one major city like Brittany for offline mode?
STARR: Unlikely

Dereck Visaard: Can new players please see a help tip the first time they walk up to a sieged POT or NPC town on the overland map that informs them they will be waived through to their destination without a fight?
STARR: They do get that message when they are waived through.

Lone-Wolf: I would love it if there was a npc that u can pay to go and fetch some of your stuff out of a bank in one city and deposit it in to another city’s bank
STARR: Great idea

Twofoldsilence: Would it be possible to load Sieges after one acknowledges that they are fine with entering the Siege upon exiting a Besieged Town instead players having to click yes, and then keep walking to finally enter the Siege?
STARR: Yes

Drew: How Likely is it that the Devs will Create Heavy Samurai Armor? How likely is it that they will Create more Shogun Furniture, like a Table and Chairs for example?
STARR: Yes. As you can see by the recent additions of elven furniture and lights we will.

Drew: Will we ever see Enemies with exotic weapons, such as Morningstars, or Scythes?
STARR: Yes

Rada Torment: Loot question: when we gonna see a gold coins loot balance between scenes? Blood River Outskirts is right now the best map to farm gold coins, and this is a new starter map. Lvl 3-4-5 scene mobs giving less than 50g ea. There is a big unbalance issue here.
STARR: We realize there is an issue here and we are working on balancing it all out.

Echondas: Since there’s no more discount wheel – can we get another wheel that gets spun periodically with silly things for ya’ll to do – like do a shot of Dave’s Gourmet ghost pepper sauce, etc?
STARR: We have very purposely been removing the more distracting elements from the livestreams so we can focus on delivering more information.

Echondas: Will those roast pigs ever be placeable as deco – perhaps for this tropical theme?
STARR: Good idea

Echondas: how about an instrument you can make from the Unicorn horn – I guess like a shofar?
STARR: Interesting

Mute209: Are any of y’all coming to San Diego Comic Con this year?
STARR: Unfortunately not this year.

ThorTordengud: Can we get Giant Reapers? Some of the big trees would make good reapers.
STARR: Perhaps

ThorTordengud: Make recipes stackable?
STARR: We cannot do this because they are learned by double clicking on them and if they were stackable they would all be consumed.

ThorTordengud: maybe 1 way mini lunar rifts. Can put one in a player owned town, and it goes where the lunar rifts go and it’s only a 1 way rift.
STARR: Unlikely but we will consider

Lockey Abernathy: When will we finally see Obsidian Wild Boars in game?
STARR: They are in the game but there were not enough of them so we have increased them. Look for more of them in an R55 patch.

ChristPallid: Why is the Snowy Mountain Road Encounter with the twin trolls called Snowy Mountain Road if there is no snow or roads through that mountain pass, and there is no bridge, so why the bridge?
STARR: Because that is the only encounter map we currently have to put that encounter in

ChristPallid: Can you make it so Row lot’s don’t need houses? I think it would make towns look better.
Aetrion: Can we have some smaller shacks that fit on row lots, in case you only have a small lot but you want a little cozy house with windows on all sides
STARR: No. That is one of the advantages of upgrading to a village lot. Also row lots are designed to help with performance by providing culling layers which assumes there is always at least a two story building on the lot.

Tharizdun Baphomet: Can the summoned daemon get his pitchfork?
STARR: Yes

Tharizdun Baphomet: Will there eventually be an Death skill that players can summon or “tame” a permanent Undead that will even follow on the Overworld map?
STARR: Perhaps eventually

Tharizdun Baphomet: Will there be more powerful boars, bears, and wolves that are on par with Ferocious reds and Darkstarr Corpions so that Tamers can have more variety late game?
STARR: Probably not but there will be other higher level tamed creatures when we add more to the taming system

Majoria70: Can we get some more features for looking for group like an easier way to tell more about our group? The subject line is really small and we can add details about what we are looking for or doing. I did a thread on it but I cannot find it anymore.
STARR: Yes

Tiina Onir: Can we get renaming weapons?
STARR: We are considering this as a perk for Grandmasters

Turok64: i think you guys need better ways of alerting people there are monthly twitch streams. Any idea what could be done to improve the visibility?
STARR: We are going to be creating Facebook and Steam events to begin with. More ideas to come

Bella Bones: Will the story of the game become more part of the game in the future?
STARR: No idea what this question means. The story is a huge part of the game. It represents over 40 hours of content (if not more) and was the guiding force for the visuals, conversations, and layouts for the entire game.

Bella Bones: Can we get a bonus for having GM Light?
STARR: We will consider

LadyKathleen: Can we get a Group player list stretched down due to buff covering names? or have the player name below another show on top of the buffs?
STARR: Yes

LadyKathleen: will banners be dyeable soon? Heraldry type
STARR: We hope to have furniture dyeing in for Q3 but UI polish is currently taking priority.

Koss: Can the Dev’s talk more on Darkstarrs post about continued double XP or are we going to keep it random?
STARR: We are currently leaning towards weekends and are experimenting with that for June/July.

Roycestein Kaelstorm: I saw that it was delayed because the “container inside container” works needs to be done. How does that relevant to the upcoming brewery feature?
STARR: It was so you could store your casks which have serving items (mugs, goblets, etc.) in them.

Jay Nord: I noticed new beds and tables in the Norgard style in Harvest – will there be recipes for those soon so we can craft them?
STARR: Yes eventually

Wandering healer: Can you change the UI so that the LFG groups are visible when you’re already in a party?
STARR: Yes

Amber Raine: We have male Elf masks any chance I do not have to gender bend and we can get Female Elf Masks on the add-on Store
STARR: Yes

Ditty: What is your primary modeling software? (Zbrush, Maya, 3DSMax, XSI…) Do you guys do high to low poly workflow or is everything box modeled? And lastly, how about texturing, are you doing old school UV painting in PS or using something like substance or 3D Coat?
STARR: Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance.

Chrip: can we please get some ship building / docks / shipyard deco items? Fallin’ Green has a backstory of being a former shipyard since long, but we’re missing matching deco items
STARR: Yes

Ancev: any thoughts on high level attunement or specializations unlocking any potential masterworking or enchantment options in the crafting system? (high level crafter and lots of XP dedicated to sun magic opens up a rare sun enchantment?)
STARR: Yes

Ancev: how about enchantments or masterworks that are weapon specific? the enchant/mw effects would only be available on those specific weapons and it might allow you to differentiate between types of polearms, swords, bludgeon weapons, etc? a bardiche is a polearm but is different than a guisarme or poleaxe, etc.
STARR: Great idea.

Ancev: will alchemists be able to convert one crown type to another?
STARR: Unlikely

Ancev: How about some sort of uh.. magic item that lets your camera follow the fireworks as they go up into the sky? you can mingle with the fireworks? then the camera resets itself back to your avatar
STARR: Neat

Malcipher: Will there ever be non magical healing that is not just potions, like a heal over time bandage or first aid, that could be based on the crafting skill tree ?
STARR: Yes something like that

Anvar: can we please trade bags with items in please, and also list bags of gear for sale on vendors, ie selling a set of obsidian armour as a set in a bag on a vendor.
STARR: Unlikely. These lead to all sorts of exploits where people sell bags of things that are not what they say they are. The work required to account for this is not something we will take on soon.

Anvar: Can something please be done with the mouse cursor in combat – maybe a dark outline and a different colour as its too easy to lose it in hectic fights, usually here at least once a fight over voice, where’s my f… mouse cursor !
STARR: Yes

Anvar: can the brewed alcohol please have some buffs or purpose beyond just the rp of it.
STARR: Yes, that is the plan for magical brews

RavenHeart: Is there any plans to help with the loot drops in the new Area like Ruined Keep as We ran that a few hours and not a single Bundle Dropped, Troll parts or Artifacts which with Smasher there should be a good drop rate.
STARR: Yes

Curt: do moon/sun eater affects harvesting of things that normally yields better during night for example
STARR: Not currently but cool idea

Daigoji Gai: With the peripheral integration (Razor) can coloring the number keys w/ same colors as the skill tiles in the combat bar in addition to keeping the “combo” hint functionality?
STARR: Cool idea

Alaric Mondragon: Could we get an automaton pattern for vendors?
STARR: Yes, there is one already for those who got one as a pledge reward.

Stryker Sparhawk: Can the removed PRTs from long ago that made Blood Bay be converted to Ruins of … <former PRT name> for castle siege scenes?
STARR: Neat idea

Daxxe Diggler: Why does my avatar do a slow crawling walk when moving towards a harvest node that I click on? Can that be changed to just follow the path at run speed without the slow down?
STARR: Because moving faster would make the pathfinding break even more

Rosemourne: What was your favourite bug found in Shroud of the Avatar that was caused by human error?
STARR: It was when someone accidentally set the cats to the wrong faction and the NPCs in all the towns immediately began murdering them all. I love cats (and dogs) and it was incredibly disturbing.

Boedy Arc: how all player see now, crafted stuff overflow on market…..will come a change?
STARR: When we get more players

Armeleon: Can you make it so playing an instrument doesn’t take you out of combat?
STARR: True story, our actual intent with artifact instruments was that you had to play them to get the effect, not just have them equipped so that implies that we need to fix this to make that happen and to fix the issue that lets you just equip those artifacts…

Griffler: With the concentration on player ran economy, will we get the ability to farm oysters for black pearls instead of sinking that money directly into the games NPC’s and bypassing the economy completely.
STARR: Yes

Ravenheart: Will there be any changes to LOST VALE to allow those who get disconnected to reconnect and still be in the lost vale instead of being kicked? It’s a huge pain to plan for a whole evening and then have plans cancelled by a disconnect.
STARR: Hopefully some of the work we are doing with the Obsidian Trial in prep for Castle Defense might address this

Kelly O’Shay: are the current in game maps in my backpack going to disappear eventually? Do I get something to replace them?
STARR: We have no plans to remove those

Turok64: so many new players starting a trial get lost and don’t know what to do when starting out. How will you ease this? can you give them a list of starting guilds or something that could help them out or give them some tips to where a town is. Maybe give them a direct TP scroll to a famous newbie town!
STARR: We are going to spend a lot of time in Q3 working on the New User Experience

Rufus D’Aspardi: Can you please put a center mark on the compass?
STARR: We have looked at this previously and there was no good option but we will revisit.

Liz_the_wiz: how we can improve truth other than telling npc’s our names (as i’ve done a shed load and it doesn’t seem to have made a dent)
STARR: We need more virtue affecting events in game. We are working on it.

KEITH: Some quests, especially those with conversation choices, can affect your virtue positively or negatively depending on the reply you choose. For example, if one of two conversation choices includes “[Lie],” choosing the “[Lie]” is bad for your Truth, while the other is good for your Truth. (Aside from Truth adjustments, I’ll also mention Umberjack’s new “shakedown” quests in Broochash are specifically designed with the possibility of reducing your Courage.)

Anvar: any chance that making leather from scraps recipe will ever get sorted > its been reported since R20s… atm you end up costing twice as much curing salt + 12 leather scraps to make same amount of leather so it’s never used.
STARR: We answered this before. Scraps recipes are not supposed to be as efficient as making leather from hides.

Anvar: on the loot front can the higher level, especially boss mobs drop small bags of regs, as killing a cabalist and getting 1 chip and 25g is a little underwhelming.

And also can a container be made that is specifically for Randomizing the item an avatar receives from its inventory?
