Underworld Ascendant: $925,000 Raised; Wailing Haunt Stretch Goal Reached

Underworld Ascendant’s ongoing crowdfunding campaign reached another milestone yesterday: the $925,000 milestone was reached, which means that Wailing Haunts will be added to the game.

In case you’ve forgotten, Haunts are kind of freaky, as enemies go:

Wailing Haunts are spectral creatures who possess a piercing cry that can deafen the player and attract other undead. While blind in the conventional sense, they can sense the motion of the living and are drawn to it. If the player remains absolutely still, they may pass right by unawares, but those who run will find a shrieking specter close on their heels.

The next stretch goal, which will unlock at $950,000 raised, is the Necropolis of the Ancients:

Deep in the eldritch darkness of The Stygian Abyss lies the foreboding Necropolis of the Ancients. Teaming with the restless dead and wandering spirits of a long-forgotten people who once lived and thrived in The Underworld, these catacombs pulsate with malevolent intent for those who still cling to life.

For those unfrightened by the cool dry grasp of the grave, there are untold secrets to uncover in this decrepit place. Hidden deep behind the Necropolis’ crumbling walls and below its dusty floors lies the tragic history of its once-great residents, crying out in warning to the rest of The Underworld.

Who dares to hear what it says?

A good place, in other words, to find Wailing Haunts. Why not chip in a bit to give these poor, misunderstood spectral creatures a home?

      That’s a ways off, still, isn’t it?

I was glad to hear they’ve reached 3D sound! There’s a whole thread on their forums about it.

It’ll be a nice feature for those equipped to take advantage of it. Not sure it’ll be that big of a deal for me.

I’m hoping it means they put more effort into ambient sounds. It is a dungeon game after all, and making such an atmosphere convincing is not only about the visuals. It’s actually not 3D sound, my mistake. Their stretch goal calls it ”Enhanced, dynamic music & SFX – More musical tracks and SFX, and a more sophisticated dynamic contextual in-game audio system”.

That’s more what I’d be interested in. And I agree…I hope they are able to put a lot more effort into the soundscape of the game.

I still shudder when I think of playing Marathon all those years ago. Bungie went above and beyond when it came to the way they engineered the sound in the game; it was a masterwork for its time. And it’d be nice to find a modern equivalent in Underworld Ascendant.
