Wallpaper for the Week (Views of Britannia: Buccaneer’s Den)

I was having trouble deciding between these two wallpapers this week, so I decided instead to feature both. The first, via The Paper Wall could well depict a pirate ship anchored just off the shore in the shallows near Buccaneer’s Den. And the second image, from the same source, could depict the rocky entrance channel to said den of thieves.

If you appreciated my previous PSA regarding Battlestar Galactica, I have another: Black Sails. It’s good and piratey. You’ll be driven crazy once you finish and realize you have to wait for another episode. It’s not on network TV, so don’t let the kids see it.

First I’ve heard of the show…sounds intriguing, though I suppose I should ask if there have been depictions of rape in any of its episodes. That isn’t a deal-breaker for me, but it would be for my wife.

Unfortunately for your wife (because it’s a damned good show) there are. It’s an extremely violent but kind-hearted show. What I mean by that is the “spirit” of the show is to reward the good and punish the bad; it doesn’t linger on the distasteful as if to suggest its audience should be enjoying the horror. It’s realistic and avoids nothing, but generally the injustice serves to set evil characters up for well-deserved retribution, which while a common dramatic device is nevertheless pretty satisfying.

Maybe you could find a way to skip that part. Most of it happens off-camera. I could maybe scan through the episodes and give you the episode number and timestamp so you wouldn’t have to do it yourself. I have the same problem with my mom (a devout Christian), who doesn’t like excessive profanity, nudity, sex or extreme violence in her entertainment.

My wife is fine with most content. Rape and any harm befalling children are the two firm exceptions.

I’ll look through it again. The rape may have been implied and not actually shown. If that’s the case the implication was done so well that I can’t remember which it was.

On the bright side, there are no acts of sex or violence against children. I actually don’t remember even seeing a child on the show; it takes place in Nassau at a port where pirates dump their illicit wares. Here’s the Wikipedia article for more info:
