Ultima 6 German Translation: Introduction, Opening Sequence, and Character Creation Translated!
A few weeks ago now (yes, I’m very terribly behind on reporting this; my apologies), Sir John left a comment here concerning the progress he was making on his attempt to translate Ultima 6 — or as much of it as possible — into German:
I’m delighted to being able to add, that the first part of the introduction, the opening sequence, is done already. I have put up the translation text as well as a video on the website http://ungesundes-halbwissen.de/wp/?p=928
Whatsmore: if all goes according to plan I should get the whole introduction including the gypsy setting translated by sunday
And indeed, he did quite well (if I do say so myself) in translating the game’s opening sequence:
The whole introduction stuff including the gypsy setting as well as the endgame and the gamestrings can only be translated using a HEX editor. This means, I have to limit my translation to the original length of strings. As German is somehat longer than English, that may well result in some inaccurate translations, but I’ll do my very best 🙂

As well, Sir John was able to translate the game’s introduction in relatively short order. And he uploaded a video of that, as well.
More recently, he also completed the translation of the gypsy sequence, a few images of which can be seen at the beginning of this article. (Click through to the post at Sir John’s website for still yet more images.)
Sir John has also found a way to add German umlauts to the game’s font, and may also have found a way to translate item descriptions…something he had previously written off as being untenable. Indeed, in his most recent post about the project, he seems to implicitly confirm that he can edit item descriptions…this in addition to announcing that all the game’s books have been translated as well.
All in all, this is a staggering amount of progress for Sir John to have made over the last three weeks. A very impressive effort indeed.
Sehr gut! I was wondering if it’d be able to handle the umlauts, it just doesn’t seem like Deutsch without ’em. Looks excellent to me!

Over the last few days I did my very best to make Umlauts work in the introduction parts as well, but much to my regret, that was to no avail 🙁 All the texts are stored in u.exe, which apparantly is executed before the font set is made available.
On the bright side, I more or less finished all item descriptions by now and these at least do feature Umlauts after all 😉
