Ultima Forever & The Eight Virtues: Justice

Mythic have once again updated the Ultima Forever Facebook page, this time kicking off a week-long examination of the Virtue of Justice:

Hello Ultima fans!

We are now into week four of our exploration of the eight virtues, and this week we’ll be discussing Justice!

Justice follows the principle of Truth and is tempered by Love. Truth is required to see through to Justice, and Love helps any punishment for wrongdoing to be fair.

Justice is associated with the town of Yew, and it’s player class is the Druid. It’s symbol is the Scales.

The cavern against Justice is the Dungeon Wrong.

The Mantra of Justice is “Beh.” Its color is Green.

In Ultima 9 – there was an error in a passage pertaining to Justice. Rather than Truth and Love, Justice had been associated with Truth and Courage. Although both interpretations work – Truth and Courage are the principles of Honor, not Justice.

Where have you seen Justice play a significant roll in Ultima? Is Justice always fair, or can it be cruel and unnecessary? Where have you seen Justice taken to an extreme?

I would posit that Justice has been the most often-abused, or at least the most obviously-abused, Virtue in Ultima lore. But then, as the Virtue that is most closely tied with the criminal justice system of the land, that makes a measure of sense; it would only be natural for a dictator like Blackthorn to co-opt it to serve as the basis for his kangaroo courts…and any aberrations in its being lived and carried out can’t help but be highly visible as a consequence of its very public role.

Anyhow, if you want to see what Yew looks like in Ultima Forever, check out this in-game map of it over at the Ultima Forever subdomain.
