Ultima 3.5 Pax Britannia: Who Wants a Cloth Map?
Andrew Owen has been doing some investigating, and has deterimed that producing a run of cloth maps for Ultima 3.5: Pax Britannia — his Ultima-inspired RPG for the ZX Spectrum — is a distinct (and affordable) possibility:
This is the preview for the cloth map. To get the best price I have to get them done in batches of four. They will cost £7.50 each not including shipping. Any takers?
Here’s the map in its full glory:
So, if you’d like to get your hands on an admittedly quite excellent representation of Sosaria in the midst of its final transformation into Britannia, drop by the UDIC Facebook group and let Andrew know!
Signing up for Facebook would be a step too far but I’ll put my name down for one of the maps here if thats an option. I would love to throw more money towards a boxed version of the final game if that was ever a possibilty. I’m a huge ZX Spectrum fan and find the idea of an Ultima on the platform irresistable.
I’ve let Andrew know!
Hi Pix,
My goal is to make an English-language boxed version including printed manual, cloth map, trinket and CD-ROM available when the code is complete. The CD-ROM would be dual format with audio tracks for loading into a real machine from a CD player, packaged versions for Windows, OS X and Linux, and the raw emulation files for use on other devices. The packaged versions would be based on a modified version of JSpeccy but would appear as native apps on OS X and Windows. The CD-ROM would also include digital versions of the map and book (in multiple languages) and the translated versions of the game. Currently I’m planning to provide Spanish and Russian versions in addition to English.
There’s still a vast amount of coding to be done, but I’m hoping that having a cloth map to look at will inspire me.
You can visit my ZX Spectrum website on Facebook without actually having to sign up to the service: http://www.facebook.com/chevs.stuff
And of course you can always get the latest news about the project right here.
Cheers!

Pretty dope that you’re using a Raspberry Pi. Actually everything about this project is pretty awesome so far. Also I apologize for my previous largely off-topic post. Dupre’s fault. :/
If you need any help (in any way) I’d like to if I can. We’re all rationing time and all, but I get the impression you’re particularly driven. If you’re still designing the game with respect to systems and programming I may be able to advise based on things I’ve run into.
If the quality is good on these it would make a badass tapestry:

Image an in-game screenshot printed on a blanket like that with a black background.
Good luck to you, renaak and the project.
We’re using Spoonflower for our projects cloth maps and its actually affordable to print them in small batches. We stick six of the maps (18″x14″) to a yard of cotton fabric and for the deluxe release it is four maps (21″x16.5″) to a yard of fabric. A yard of the basic cotton fabric is US$18 printed.
The maps with the white borders, the others (darker) are old test prints from another company.

Look at the sun way up there in the sky.
Shining forever the world is so bright.
A little bird chirping, high in the tree…
He flew right down, and whispered these words to me:
He said, “Look all around. Life is just so beautiful, I’ve found.”
Look at the sun way up there in the sky.
Shining forever the world is so bright.
Went down to the river to wash all my cares away…
Saw a little fish swimmin’, and here’s what he had to say:
He said, “Look, don’t ya know?”
“Life is just so easy when you go with the flow.”
The cloth map prices seem a bit steep, but worth it at the same time. Sign me up if you make them.
