Larian Saturdays
Larian Studios upcoming isometric RPG, Divinity: Original Sin, inadvertently launched its Kickstarter campaign. (The “inadvertent” part is explained by studio head Sven Vincke here.)
Note that this Kickstarter campaign isn’t reflective of any sort of…trouble on Larian’s part; Original Sin is, technically, fully funded, and will make its ship date even if the Kickstarter campaign fails. Rather, the Kickstarter serves two purposes for Larian: it allows them to offer their fans a means of pre-ordering what looks to be an awesome RPG that gives due and compelling homage to classic games like Ultima 7 and Baldur’s Gate, and also allows them to pull in a bit more funding to…spruce the game up a bit more than their current development budget allows for.
Especially if you’re an Ultima fan, this is a Kickstarter to back; Larian Studios have been pretty up front about the fact that they have taken Ultima 7 as a major inspiration for Original Sin, and have even boasted that the entirety of Ultima 7 could be re-created within the editor that ships with the game…which is a bold statement, and hopefully an accurate reflection of just how powerful said toolkit is.
Because, yes, the game ships with a robust toolkit.
This, by the way, is (I think) the preview that caused the premature Kickstarter launch. That said, the project doesn’t seem to be hurting overmuch, having already reached over 50% of its goal. Larian have posted a couple of updates to it already, including a look at the toolkit and a special bonus item for backers of the Kickstarter campaign.
