Exult Rotate: Update and New Screenshots
Over at the Exult forums, cma has released a new build of his mod for Exult 1.4.9, colloquially referred to as Exult Rotate. In this update, he has added support for all other fill modes, and for different window sizes. Use of the 2xSaI scaler is still a requirement, however.
You can download the updated standalone executable and patch for Exult 1.4.9 at the forum thread, or here at the project entry.
Also: Exult forum regular Mimu has posted a handful of screenshots, which I have added to the project entry. You can also see them on the forum thread. The images are interesting in that they demonstrate that Exult Rotate also supports Serpent Isle, in addition to The Black Gate. Not that there was really any reason to doubt that this was the case, of course…but hard evidence is nice to see.
I’m not sure about the exact method being used to do this, but from my experiments this is my favorite way:
Render a native frame covering a large area. Scale it to two times its resolution. Rotate it 45 degrees about its center. Scale back to encompass user’s display area.
This result will give you diamond-shaped pixels instead of square pixels, which works very well and is most truthful to the original but requires a decent display resolution such as 1280×720 or 1920×1080/1200. It’s visually the same thing as turning and cropping your monitor or line of sight, but keeping the 16-bit pixellated vibe.
