Richard Garriott Explains The Eight Virtues
For those of you who are intimately familiar with Ultima lore, the Eight Virtues need no introduction. For those of you who have only recently come to appreciate the series and its history, however, the following video — narrated by Richard Garriott himself — might prove instructive:
And really, for those of you who were already familiar with how the Virtues and the Principles all fit together, this is a nice little glimpse into history. Some of the background art leads me to believe that it was produced as some sort of promotional video for Ultima 9, though I have no idea if it was ever used, or (if so) how widespread it was in that use.
Looks familiar. I may have watched it back in the day. Was this included with the Ultima Collection?
Interesting, I didn’t know how the symbol was created. Good find! Where did you find this? I don’t remember it on the UC disk. And the UC disk is the sole reason I have all the Ultima games past U7-U9.
Joe “Origin Museum” Garrity left it in a folder on the site’s FTP. I’m assuming he got it from out of the Mythic archives.
Not as good as the more commonly seen one running around the internet.
I never liked the explanation of humility — that pride is the absence of all principals and that humility is the opposite of pride. I would have simply said that humility is the virtue that is not derived from any of the three principals. That makes sense and is more elegant.
Heh, very true. Also, if spirituallity is the combination of truth, love and courage. The absense of which should be the direct opposite of spirituallity. Which would be… spiritless? I wouldn’t say inherently pride.
Is a narcissist not exhibiting love and pride at the same time? Doesn’t honour and valour have some sort of connection to pride? If you’ve truthfully accomplished a great task, do you not feel pride?
I guess it harkens back to feeling pride in oneself rather than exhibiting it openly as the most moral stance one can hold.
Hubris is sometimes considered to be among the gravest of sins – perhaps that’s why RG chose to make it literally the absence of any virtuous principle.
Good point.
That reminds me of Conor being the most humble in New Magincia in Ultima 6. Although it wouldn’t be false for him to state he was the most humble. He realizes that perfection can not be obtained and thus is humbled by his own imperfections. At least, that’s how I see it.
The older I get, the more value I see in humility.
That was a video from the Official Ultima IX website.
I made a T-shirt with this symbol. It’s not good, but, at least, I tried… hehehe…
