Gaming News Wrap-Up: I Was Moving! Edition
I seem to recall missing posting anything from about last Thursday onward, so let’s begin with a look at Bethesda Softworks and what they are up to. Like…Dishonored!
User interface options for Dishonored saw some discussion at the Bethesda Blog, including some of the PC-specific features that the game’s UI will offer. Also on the “Bethblog”: more questions and answers about stealth in the game.
Dishonored has also been previewed a fair bit, and its designers have likewise given numerous interviews. Apparently, the game can even be played quasi-pacifistically, though not without some difficulty. The game will likely see even more coverage after QuakeCon 2012 in August, at which Dishonored will be available for play.
Oh, and don’t miss this fan-made trailer for a hypothetical Dishonored movie.
On the Skyrim front, the first major DLC for the game, Dawnguard, continues to see reviews published, which continue to be middling in terms of score. The high end of middling, typically, but…still.
This mashup of Skyrim and Minecraft, meanwhile, is utterly amusing.
GamesIndustry sat down with Matt Firor to talk about The Elder Scrolls Online recently, and again the focus was on how that game will offer something different than just any old MMORPG. Forbes, meanwhile, wondered whether The Elder Scrolls Online might make the jump to consoles.
There was actually a fair bit of news related to Obsidian Entertainment that came out last week, most of it focused on their upcoming South Park RPG, The Stick of Truth. Several sites, including GamingAngels, Joystiq, GameZone, and MTV Multiplayer scored previews of the game, and in general they sound positive about it. GamingAngels described it as “the largest LARPing session you have ever seen”, and Joystiq noted that the developers had certainly kept up the obscene tone of the television series…while at the same time also parodying it a bit.
Four new screenshots for The Stick of Truth were also released last week. I defy you to tell them apart from the TV series!
Jason Fader, who produced Fallout: New Vegas, held an AMAA session on Reddit. He’s no longer with Obsidian, but a lot of the questions he fielded related to the studio even so. J.E. Sawyer, meanwhile, wrote a blog post about art and appreciation that he tied back to game development issues such as character development.
Also, the first work-in-progress screenshot of Wasteland 2 has been released. It has a suitably classical post-apocalyptic aesthetic.
There wasn’t any news from Larian Studios in the last week (oddly enough), but I did notice a few articles that gave some attention to CD Projekt. CD Projekt RED of course made it onto Gamasutra’s list of the top 30 game developers, and the studio also offered up some insightful commentary to Gamasutra about what making The Witcher series taught them about RPGs. Oh, and Forbes have published their review of The Witcher 2’s second chapter.
Which…brings us to BioWare, I suppose, it being Monday and all.
On the Star Wars: The Old Republic front, the HK-51 assassin droid got its big reveal last week. It is evidently a new companion for, I would assume, both Empire and Republic players…but don’t take my word for that.
And of course, John Riccitiello’s comments on CNBC about how SWTOR’s subscription model is “challenging” have erupted into rumours that The Old Republic is going to switch to a free-to-play model. Good grief. (Though, to be fair, Riccitiello also said (in that same interview) that he sees real power in the free-to-play model.)
All is not well at BioWare Austin, by the way: executive producer Rich Vogel left the company’s employ amidst rumours of other layoffs.
An upcoming Mass Effect 3 DLC will focus heavily on Commander Shepard, by the way…but don’t ask me what that means. Presumably this is not the same DLC that is rumoured to feature a rogue Reaper.
Oh, and speaking of Mass Effect and DLC, BioWare reaffirmed recently that Mass Effect 3 will be coming to the Wii U console. That release will evidently ship with the Extended Cut DLC already built in.
