EA Talks Franchise Reboots

Our friends at the Wing Commander CIC have linked to a news piece at Joystiq concerning some recent comments by EA Labels president Frank Gibeau on two recent franchise attempts made by Electronic Arts to reboot old franchises…in this case, Syndicate and SSX.

Syndicate was something that we took a risk on. It didn’t pay off – it didn’t work,” Gibeau told CVG. “But in general it doesn’t change my appetite for wanting to go look in the library and see what we have and maybe bring back some IPs for the next-generation. That’s the nature of the business; some stuff works, some stuff doesn’t.”

For reference, SSX was considered something of a success. More interesting, however, is this:

“It’s done well and you’ll probably see more in the future,” Gibeau concluded.

More…SSX? Or more franchise reboots?

OH WOW I wonder why that happened?

To be fair I think it’s more because the end result was rather mediocre rather than the fact they turned it into a FPS if that’s what you’re hinting at.

It will be interesting to see how the Sim City reboot turns out.
