Legend of Grimrock Level Editor Still In Development
Almost Human’s Antti Tiihonen posted an update to the official Legend of Grimrock blog, in which he gave a brief update on the level editor that is in development for the game:
And now that we got the first patch done, Petri has been mostly occupied by the work with level editor and it’s been progressing steadily. If you want to stay on the pulse of the development of the editor, there’s a thread on our forums which Petri will update as the work with it progresses.
That’s some good news. Legend of Grimrock has been garnering rave reviews, and a few people have weighed in here with their thoughts on the game. Despite listing Ultima Underworld as an inspiration, the game is definitely more in the vein of other dungeon-crawlers of yesteryear. That said, depending on how robust the toolkit proves to be, it may well be the case that someone could make use of it to craft a remake of one of the Underworld games.
Time, as always, will tell.
No way. Legend of Grimrock is beautiful, but not the right choice for a Underworld remake.
Surely Skyrim’s engine would be a better fit?
Not sure how you would manage the runic magic though.
Hmm… I can think of a few ways runic magic could be done in it. I think the best would be hijacking some of the quick-slots in the game, and use scripting to see what runes have been put into them. Relatively simple implementation of the rune system (UI is fairly easy to change too, so it could be made to show up in non-quick-slot places for immersion reasons). Elder Scrolls is definitely the best engine to build an Underworld game in that I can think of.
