Britannia in Minecraft
AvatarAcid has been implementing the land of Britannia, circa Ultima 7, in Minecraft, and his efforts thus far have produced some impressive results.
His project offers more than just familiar locations, however. As can be seen in the screenshots above, he has also created a custom texture pack for Minecraft, and has even made a handful of character skins so that you can run around Britannia in the guise of the Avatar, Lord British, Dupre, Iolo, Shamino…and even the Daemon Arcadion!
At present, AvatarAcid has made available the City of Britain and the Shrine of Spirituality; both packages require MCEdit to add to the game. The City of Britain is also available as a standalone world save file, in case you’re having trouble with MCEdit. Which, given the size and detail of some of these maps, might prove to be an issue. He has also completed work on Iolo’s Hut, but wasn’t able to export it in time for this release.
Also available is a replacement file that will convert paintings in the game to Ultima-related images.
You can grab all of the files at the brand new project entry.
Hey, that’s nice. Although, the huge ankh and Codex symbol on Castle British look rather goofy.
Thanks for the feedback Infinitron. I was unsure on both of them also, as they are not canon at all and a lot of things look goofy in cubic form lol. However if there was a stone roof as per the structure in U7 it would just look like a cave inside 🙂 If MineCraft can come up with some more interesting and effective way to light the place up, I’ll certainly make the structure canon.
Heh, I’ve never thought about that. It is kind of weird how big indoor structures had the exact same level of lighting as sunlit outdoor locations in these old games.
Wouldn’t a few strategically placed picture windows and torches/gaslights be an acceptable substitute?
They possibly could! The castle in U7 has stained glass windows. There is however only one glass texture in the game so that make it hard to have both glass and a version of stained glass.
The main issue is I built the structure in my multiplayer server, monsters spawn in the dark and I could never light it effectively before removing the ceiling. Maybe I should now put the project in a monster free sandbox and work on getting it a bit more cannon when the next update is pushed out.
Amazing job! Congrats AvatarAcid!
