Jack Ryan: Ultima Fan

:extralife:

Pix posted an old review of Ultima 6 from PC Leisure just recently, which is actually a short (and very positive) review of the game fused to a somewhat lengthier summary of the genesis and history (to that point in time) of Origin Systems. What is mentioned, both in Pix’s post and in the article, is that American military/espionage fiction author Tom Clancy is — or was, at any rate — a major fan of the Ultima series. So much so, in fact, that he even made his most well-known character, Jack Ryan, a fan of the games as well, as was revealed in Patriot Games (the book, not the movie):

Be careful...the scroll bars are extremely sensitive.

Look for the paragraph that begins: “Ryan leaned back and lit another low-tar cigarette…”

Thanks goes out to Pix (and Bandit LOAF of the Wing Commander CIC for the assist in the comments) for unearthing this interesting little factoid!

Jesus, just quote the damn thing:

“Ryan leaned back and lit another low-tar cigarette bought from the kiosk on the next floor down. It went well with the coffee that was serving to keep him awake. He was up against another blank wall. It made him think of the computer games he occasionally played at home when he was tired of writing–Zork and Ultima. The business of intelligence analysis was so often like those computer “head games.” You had to figure things out, but you never quite knew what it was that you were figuring out. The patterns you had to deduce could be very different from anything one normally dealt with, and the difference could be significant or mere happenstance.”

Cool quote, though. Interesting how authors sometimes mix their direct experience (assuming Clancy played those games) into their work. My dad did so with his novel when it was useful.

Also, Jack Ryan would love this song:

He’s probably boogie to it all night long.
