Ultima 4: NES, FM Towns, and SEGA Master System

It seems fitting, on the day that the first four Ultima games are released for sale on Good Old Games, to take a look at some of the different ways that Ultima 4 has been presented to game players over the years.

Here, for example, is the ending sequence to Ultima 4, as it appeared in the Nintento Entertainment System (NES) port of the game:

Thou art an Avatar!

Of course, back in this day and age, the console wars were between Nintendo and SEGA. So I’d be remiss not to also present this, the introductory sequence from the SEGA Master System port of the game:

Such vibrant colour!

And because we’ve been looking at the FM Towns introductions for all the other Ultima titles released on Good Old Games today, here is the FM Towns version of Ultima 4’s opening:

Also colourful!

Natively, the PC port of the game never looked as good as these….at least, not to my memory. On the other hand, the PC port — thanks to the hard work of Ultima fans over the years — also has some of the best graphical updates available, so in the main it all balances out.

Update: Sergorn Dragon also found this clip, the introduction and character creation sequence from the SEGA Master System port of the game:

Sergorn likes this version best.
