Forgotten World: What's Your Favourite Dungeon in Ultima 9?

Iceblade sent in another request by email: he wants to know your favourite dungeon in Ultima 9, Dragons and Dragonettes.

As such:

Feel free to discuss your reasons in the comments, and be sure to mention any features or puzzles that you were particularly fond of. Or, discuss the dungeon features and puzzles that you found particularly distasteful…but I would encourage you to discuss what you liked as well, since that information will probably be rather more helpful to the Forgotten World team.

Pretty sure Hythloth was the worst. You can’t take into account that it had a secret second half of dungeon as an easter egg and say it’s my favourite because that was cool.

And Shame was only slightly better. I really didn’t know what was going on in that dungeon the entire time, at least until I got to the column. Even being teleport-trapped in that box for a good minute just waiting for the mantra thing to come up left me a bit clueless.

Hmm…I wonder if Deceit is first because it was the shortest.

Just a note, Dungeons will be expanded. Heck, updates to them might be my first release. >:D Heck, everybody has played through the game using the original dungeons, surely people want to shuffle up the experience some. I probably won’t do it like that though, just release Milestone-wise ala U6P. Although after the first three parts, things are going to get annoying larger *hint* *hint*

Also, I’m surprised nobody has noticed that I found a fix for the flying Rune/Sigil thing. 🙁

Fair enough. I’ve been so swamped preparing for tomorrow that I haven’t had time to post all the news I want to.

I’ll try get around to getting some news up about the fix tonight. Can’t say that’s a promise, though…there’s still lots of material I need to prepare!

I’d have a hard time naming one which I think was best: perhaps Deceit, Covetous, or Destard… but on the whole I loved all of Ultima IX’s dungeons and I feel they were by far the best the series had to offer.

Now I will assume that the reason Iceblad asks this question is because they wonder what approach to take for dungeons in Forgotten Worlds.

I’ll say this though: the strength of Ultima IX’s dungeon came from their variety. No two dungeons were alike, some were more puzzled oriented, some had more combats, some were a clever mix or two, puzzles and monsters tended to vary from dungeon and dungeon and so on.

I’d say the important point is to keep this variety and not fall into the pitfall of many RPG which is to have dungeon consist solely of hack’n slash romps.

I will mention that there will be several minor dungeons added rather than just the few the devs managed to create like Serpent’s Hold and the Moonglow catacombs.

Hmm…Britain Catacombs map? I wonder what is in there, maybe worth building up. Just a note, these “mini” (optional) dungeons won’t be that small, we’re talking Deceit/Abyss length (both rather small for U9 dungeons).

Hey Sergorn, did you get my email?

  7. Sergorn says:

I did, haven’t had time to check yet though.

  8. Dungy says:

I always liked Shame. Lots of puzzles kept it interesting, and I didn’t get beaten up so much. Had a Zelda64 feeling to it that I really enjoyed.

  9. Dungy says:

Also, fixed flying sigils/rune? THAT’S AWESOME!

  10. Iceblade says:

Even, if those settings don’t work for all systems. It tells me how I can very easily fix it for everybody with simple coordinate change on 16 objects, though that would require restarting the game from the end of Stonegate.
