Ultima IX: Redemption Posts Spiritwood Screenshots

Corv sent me an email — and also left a comment, I believe — announcing that the Titans of Ether have released a handful of new screenshots from Ultima IX: Redemption. In particular, they’ve released some images of their rendition of the Spiritwood:

Now that’s looking mighty promising, isn’t it? Be sure to hit up the Titans’ website for the other images, in higher resolution.

It’s looking pretty amazing considering it uses the Morrowind engine (and that game was made of shades of brown). They really seem the have given the forest atmosphere.

I am very impressed with all of their screenshots. The Morrowind engine is surprisingly capable. I used to tinker with it back in the day. I had a forest of vast trees where a player with high athletics could jump from branch to branch ala Ninja Scroll, and had a lot of fun creating dojos and what not. Beacuse of Ultima VII, I got a script from someone in the community to have deer run away from the player and give meat from their inventory when killed. Ah those were the days…

I look forward to playing this. I couldn’t get into Lazarus for whatever reason (though I -will- play it through one of these days), yet I desire to play Redemption very much!

Morrowind’s engine is actually not bad, despite its age. Pushed out with things like MGE and texture/model replacers, it can outclass Oblivion at its highest settings, and even rival newer titles.

And I’m looking forward to views along the lines of http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/8317/mgescreenshot4.jpg this one.

Any of the TR team working with Redemption, or vice versa?

  5. Sslaxx says:

It surprises me that the Redemption team works in relative isolation to other Morrowind projects, really. No discussion about it on Beth’s forums, for example.

I just don’t understand why the screenshots are in BMP format.
    Even PNG’s would’ve been smaller.

Pity you can’t delete posts here. Just checked the responses after me to the screenshots thread, never mind me.

    Please do, thanks.

I wouldn’t say that Morrowind can outclass Oblivion. Even with new models/textures/etc Morrowind still doesn’t have as good graphics due to the way Oblivion displays graphics (shadows/lighting/etc). Plus, Oblivion can have models/textures/etc added as well. And Oblivion lets you cheat a little too:

Everything in that apart from the height of the land was completely comuter generated. I might, before release, go back and add some more things to the forest but as it stands it already looks pretty awesome.

However, My screenshot might look better graphically, but Redemption’s Spiritwood screenshots show really awesome design and atmosphere which my forests currently lack (due to me working on an extremely tight deadline with no team members). Everything I have seen of Redemption so far has shown a lot of care going into every detail. Which is why I’m looking forward to it so much.

Fantastic work. I’m impressed that this project has been doing so well for so long. It’s one of the few that I’ve been paying attention to.

Nevertheless, let us not forget that it’s not all about the graphics. Otherwise Crysis would be better than Ultima. 🙂

The pics of Minoc look pretty good, too.

An appearance of rustic and busy at the same time. I’m going to love this game when its finished.
