Back to Roots progress; possible U5 bug?

For the most part, Fearyourself/JC has been working on upgrading Nytegard’s Ultima 5 tools (which I really need to add to Aiera); he goes into detail about the differences between his versions and Nytegard’s in this post.

However, he has also identified something that he thinks might be a bug in Ultima 5‘s dialogue file:

there seems to be a bug in the CASTLE.TLK file with Weblock’s entry.

Here is what I get with Nytegaard’s program:

gorn
hass
<or>
He is a prisoner in the dungeon!

This means that instead of :
You ask gorn/hass, you get “He is a prisoner in the dungeon!”, if you ask gorn, you get “hass”. I checked in-game and confirmed that.

I haven’t seen any ripple effects this might have on the rest of the dialogue of Weblock.

I’ve got a couple of questions to everyone:

– Is this known ?
– Would people care about a fix for this and under what form?

I don’t personally recall encountering this, but…well, it’s been a while since I last played Ultima 5, and my memory is what it is (that is: shoddy). So I can’t directly comment on this…but I put it out there for the community. Is this a bug that anyone recalls encountering, and would a fix be welcomed/warranted?

    I don’t quite understand this, what do you mean by “You ask gorn/hass, you get “He is a prisoner in the dungeon!”, if you ask gorn, you get “hass”.”

    Does this mean if you talk to (whoever it is) and say “hass” to them, they say “He is a prisoner in the dungeon!”, and if you say “gorn” to them, they say “hass” ?

    Actually not really.

    In theory, gorn is a character in the game and hassad is a character in the game.

    Weblock asks you “Who are you looking for?” and if you say gorn or hassad you should get “He is a prisoner in the dungeon!”.

    However in the current state of the talk file, you get :

    gorn -> “hass”
    hass -> I don’t understand/don’t know what you’re talking about

    Fixes are always good.

    My fix is done and is here: http://backtoroots.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/backtoroots/utils/u5fixCastle/

    It’s a simple fix to the issue so nothing huge but still, it’s there ;-).

    Tell me if you’d like in another form,

      If you email me a ZIP file & installation instructions, I’ll add it to the B2R project entry. Or create a standalone entry.

      Ditto for your updates to Nytegard’s tools.

    I found that if you enter into the kitchen in LB castle sometimes the guard blocks you in and you can get out. Happened to me the other day. I had to restore. 🙁 doh!

    While we’re on the subject of bugs in Ultima 5… this page describes what appears to be one:
    http://lparchive.org/Ultima-4-5-and-6/Update%2030/

    Now, I have been carrying around a moonstone for quite a while, and yes, I can plant it underground. Now, from the guides and stuff I’ve read, this is supposed to work. However, when I actually step into the Moongate…

    I get transported to some weird 1×1 room with no exits. It’s possible I’m stuck at the entrance of a dungeon I’ve not yet unsealed, but I have no idea. Anyone else know what the hell is up here?

    That seems more a bug of the engine itself and not of the data files, I’ll try to figure that one out as I get to that 😉
