Someone Got Ultima 4 Running On a Third-Party In-Dash Entertainment Unit (Updated)

Via r/dosgaming on Reddit:

So, what’s everyone been playing?

I don’t know enough about Ford cars, or the in-dash entertainment system on a Focus, to know how this was made possible. But it’s pretty cool (even if it does pose a distracted driving risk)!

The First Age of Update: Contrary to the suggestion in the comments that this image may have been digitally altered, what is perhaps more likely is that the owner isn’t actually running the game on the head unit, but has instead set the Ultima 4 title screen as a background image. (Thanks to Corey for both suggesting this and ruining all the fun.)

Revenge of the Update: According to the original poster at Reddit, however, this is the real thing:

This is an aftermarket radio running DOSBOX

So I suppose the next question is: what make and model of head unit is that?

Updateodus: We have an answer, again from the original poster at Reddit:

It’s a Chinese-made Android 8.1 unit. I think it’s a “HiFimax”. There’s a specialty shop that mostly deals in Ford Focus parts that sells it. The front panel replaces the vents, and the controls mimic the factory “upgraded” radios from the higher-trimmed models. It’s a very specific application.

You can view all of the different head units that HiFiMax offers for the Ford Focus at this link. I’m not quite sure which one the original poster is running in the image above, but I suppose that answer would depend on which year his vehicle was made.

Quest of the Update: Now with video!

Seems like the real deal to me!

hmmm… i hate to say it, but that feels photoshopped. The angle of the screen doesn’t seem quite right, and the reflections in the walls around the screen aren’t quite the same color light as what is being shown on screen.
