Extra Life 2013: Origin Systems Fans, Unite!

As some of you may recall, I’ve kind of adopted Extra Life as my charity of choice, primarily because it benefits Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. My own kids, as well as their cousins, have all been patients of the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton in the past; some of them are really only alive today because the Stollery was there. So I’m happy to do what I can to support the Stollery in particular, and the Children’s Miracle Network in general.

And I invite you all to do the same.

If you’re at all curious about what Extra Life is and why it began, have a read of this. Here’s the short version: not unlike other charity fundraisers, it involves collecting pledges from friends, family, and even complete strangers in order to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Participants can select a particular hospital that their funds will be used to support, if they wish.

Then, on November 2nd, the actual event begins.

Whereas others collect pledges that culminate in a run, or a walk, Extra Life participants collect pledges that culminate in a 24-hour (or, in this case, 25-hour thanks to the time change) gaming marathon. (Runners gonna run, gamers gonna game!) 100% of the donated funds go to the Children’s Miracle Network, and tax receipts are available.

If you’re interested in participating, sign up here. Be sure to join Team Vas Mani when you do (the “Great Heal” spell seems a fitting moniker for this effort, no?).

If, on the other hand, you’d like to support either myself or Vas Mani, hit up one of the links in the sidebar.

Thanks, in advance, for your support!

  1. Any ideas for a theme this year?

Well, we’ve got U4E and SotA on the radar at present. Mythic did Extra Life internally last year, and will likely do it again this year…and I’m currently trying to convince Portalarium to do likewise. The opportunity is ripe, in other words, to have Ultima’s current caretakers, its spiritual successors, and its loyal fans all working toward the Extra Life goal.

None of the above is really a theme in and of itself, but it would certainly make for good promotional fodder!

Depending on how many volunteers Vas Mani scare up and what computing platforms they have available to them, it might be neat to see if we could all get in on one big multiplayer session, all at once, in some game of our collective choosing. Of course, given the right game and sundry other conditions, having a three-way free-for-all between Vas Mani, Mythic, and Portalarium might be…significantly awesome. Like, the sort of thing we should stream on Twitch or G+.

Anyhow, I’m open to suggestions here.

      • That would be fun. I’m just not sure I can make it 25 hours anymore!

I would consider starting a new character in U4E and seeing how far they can get in a day. Of course, that means staying near a plug because the iPad battery will die long before that.

Otherwise, got lots of games I havn’t got to play yet. Divinity Collection, Fallout 3, Skyward Sword, etc. I should probably get back to SWTOR eventually.

But somehow I think I’ll end up playing U6P… again. =)

I may be in the same straits; depends on whether I’m on a work trip or not.

I’ll likely be playing Ultima 6 again, though. Because I always do.

      • With my new job, flexibility is at an all-time high, especially with this much notice. I can definitely block off a day for gaming. Last year I was tentatively in, this year I’m definitely in.

Last year was a bit of a mess for me, as well. Hopefully this year will be better.
