Matt Barton and Richard Garriott, Part the Third

Matt Barton managed to pull Richard Garriott in for a third chat. This time around, the two men discuss indie games, ethical systems, and (naturally) the Ultima series:

What’s interesting here, as Inifitron Dragon observed on the Ultima Dragons Facebook group, is that if Garriott is remembering facts and details correctly, the creation of the Eight Virtues in Ultima 4 was not primarily motivated by the moral panic over Dungeons & Dragons and violence in computer games in the 1980s, but by Garriott’s desire to encourage players to choose heroic behaviour, and to up-end the traditional RPG “min-max” playstyle.

At any rate, give it a watch. As is always the case with the good Mr. Barton, it’s an engaging interview.

Another great interview. Can’t believe his sister in law hasn’t spoken with him since 1980 due to his devil-worshiping virtual ways.

  2. Wow, great stuff. That’s very interesting about the switch to the IBM PC back in the U5 days and how it nearly killed the company. I wonder if that’s why U4 part 2 got canned.
